Hanami - Character Overview

Hanami is one of the highest-ranking Cursed Spirits, classified as a special grade Cursed Spirit. Born from the fear of forests, Hanami possesses immense power and wields the ability to control plants.
Visually, Hanami has an imposing and muscular physique, standing tall with white armor-like plating covering their body. Their pale skin is marked with black stripes, and their head features an eerie design—a nearly perpetually closed mouth revealing exposed gums, and horn-like branches growing from where eyes would typically be. Hanami’s left arm, which is entirely black, is usually wrapped in white cloth, sealing its power.
■Personality and Nature
Unlike many other Cursed Spirits, Hanami is calm, soft-spoken, and highly articulate. While Cursed Spirits are inherently inclined to harm humans, Hanami demonstrates a surprising level of thoughtfulness. They even acknowledge the existence of kind-hearted humans, stating that “even plants recognize the presence of gentle people.” This sets Hanami apart from other special grade Cursed Spirits, making them a more contemplative and unique antagonist.
■Gender and Anime Adaptation
In the anime adaptation, Hanami’s voice is provided by a female voice actor, but their appearance and physique are overwhelmingly masculine. Interestingly, Cursed Spirits in Jujutsu Kaisen tend to manifest in male-like forms, regardless of their origins. A similar case is Rika Orimoto, who, despite being female in life, took on a more masculine appearance as a Cursed Spirit. This has led to speculation that Hanami could potentially be female, though their true identity remains unknown.
Hanami’s Abilities

■Plant Manipulation (Unnamed)
Hanami possesses a unique Cursed Technique that allows them to manifest and control plants at will. Their technique operates in two distinct ways:
- Creation from Nothing – Hanami can generate plants from scratch using cursed energy.
- Enhancement of Existing Flora – By channeling cursed energy into nearby plants, Hanami can strengthen and manipulate them.
The sheer power of this ability allows Hanami to cover an entire battlefield with vegetation or instantly summon massive trees reaching tens of meters in height. However, the greater the number and length of the plants, the more Hanami's speed and precision decrease.
■Techniques
Wooden Ball (木の鞠, Ki no Mari)
Hanami generates a large, ball-like wooden structure. The sphere functions both offensively and defensively:
- It fires wooden spikes to attack opponents.
- Hanami can ride the sphere to hover in midair.
Flower Field (美しき大地, Utsukushiki Daichi)
This technique creates a flower field either around Hanami or in an area where they have launched their plants.
Any enemy who enters the field experiences a forced relaxation effect, lowering their battle readiness and dulling their fighting spirit.
Cursed Bud (呪いの種子, Noroi no Tane)
Hanami releases special parasitic seeds that thrive on cursed energy and attach to living organisms.
- These seeds grow by absorbing the target's cursed energy, causing them to burrow deeper into the body the more cursed energy is used.
- Defending with cursed energy is counterproductive, so the victim must endure the attack with their physical body instead.
Offering Flowers (供花, Kuge)
A strange, red flower with an eyeball at its center grows from Hanami’s left shoulder.
- Hanami usually keeps their left arm wrapped in cloth, hiding this technique, stating “I never wanted to use this if I didn’t have to.”
- In its normal state, the flower remains a bud, but when fed cursed energy from the left arm, it blooms and unleashes a powerful, concentrated blast, akin to a cursed energy cannon.
Note: The technique names listed above were introduced in the mobile game Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade.

■Early Events
During Jogo’s surprise attack on Satoru Gojo, Hanami intervened to save Jogo after he was left as nothing but a severed head. By activating Flower Field, Hanami momentarily distracted Gojo, creating an opening to successfully rescue Jogo.
■Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc
Hanami launched an assault on Jujutsu High, working with curse user allies to establish a Curtain that specifically barred Gojo from entering.
They proceeded to wreak havoc against both Kyoto and Tokyo Jujutsu students, engaging in combat with Toge Inumaki, Maki Zenin, Megumi Fushiguro, and Noritoshi Kamo.
In a later battle against Yuji Itadori and Aoi Todo, Hanami initially found themselves at a disadvantage due to the duo’s exceptional teamwork. However, Hanami recovered using their endurance, combat skills, and intelligence as a special grade Cursed Spirit. Just as they were about to activate their Domain Expansion to secure victory, Gojo arrived after the Curtain was lifted.
Gojo unleashed Hollow Technique: Purple, severely injuring Hanami by obliterating half of their body, forcing them to retreat in critical condition.

■Shibuya Incident
Alongside Choso and Jogo, Hanami confronted Gojo at Shibuya Station. Initially, they put up a fight using Domain Amplification to counter Gojo’s Infinity, allowing them to land attacks.
However, the power gap remained immense. When Hanami recklessly deactivated Domain Amplification, Gojo exploited their weakness—ripping out the branch-like horns from their face, dealing a fatal blow.
Shortly after, Hanami was completely crushed by Gojo’s Limitless Cursed Technique, marking their defeat and exorcism.
