Overview of Choso
■Who is Choso?
Choso is a hybrid of a cursed spirit and human, characterized by his refined facial features, a single line marking near his nose, and distinctive purple shadows under his eyes. His unique appearance, coupled with his lethargic demeanor, hides a passionate side as an elder brother willing to sacrifice his life to protect his siblings.
His primary motivation is rooted in his identity as a brother. For the sake of his siblings, Choso acts without hesitation, disregarding his own position or safety. However, there are moments of reflection where he regrets having taken away his brothers’ choices, adding depth to his character with a mix of internal conflict and human vulnerability.
Following the deaths of his younger brothers, Eso and Kechizu, at the hands of Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki, Choso joined the ranks of the cursed spirits during the Shibuya Incident, seeking vengeance for his family.
Later, due to the influence of "False Memory," Choso comes to believe Yuji Itadori is also his brother. This shift drives him to protect Yuji and to act in his defense, adding a new layer to his role in the story.
Choso’s Abilities
■Techniques:
Convergence (百斂, Byakuren):
A foundational technique where Choso compresses his blood into small red orbs. This technique acts as a prerequisite for more advanced moves, such as Piercing Blood and Supernova. The higher the compression, the greater the power of the resulting attack.
Piercing Blood (穿血, Senketsu):
A technique that ejects compressed blood at supersonic speeds in a straight line, capable of piercing targets like a high-powered water jet cutter. While highly effective for long-range attacks, it requires preparation time, leaving Choso momentarily vulnerable.
Supernova (超新星, Chōshinsei):
A wide-area attack where compressed blood is released in a shotgun-like burst in all directions. The scattered projectiles are difficult to dodge and laced with poison, enabling Choso to incapacitate enemies with a single strike.
Blood Meteorite (血星磊, Kesseiseki):
This technique hardens blood into bullet-like projectiles that are fired like handgun rounds. While less powerful than Piercing Blood, it is effective for ambushes and support purposes.
Flowing Red Scale: Stack (赤鱗躍動, Sekirin Yakudō - Sai):
By manipulating his own blood flow, Choso dramatically enhances his physical abilities, including dynamic vision, strength, and endurance. The technique also regulates body temperature, allowing him to perform in extreme conditions.
Wing King (翅王, Shio):
Choso manifests blood-made wings on his back, enabling him to fire homing blood projectiles. This technique mimics the Maximum Technique: Wing King used by his brother, Eso, offering superior range and adaptability.
■Weaknesses of Blood Manipulation:
Dilution in Water:
The blood manipulated in Choso’s techniques dissolves easily in water. If the blood is diluted, it loses its effectiveness, rendering the technique useless. As a result, operating in environments with abundant water severely limits his capabilities.
Strain on the Body:
Hardened or coagulated blood can increase the risk of thrombosis for the user. This limitation demands careful monitoring during extended use in combat situations.
Choso's Power and Evaluation
Choso's combat abilities are considered equivalent to a top-tier Grade 1 sorcerer or even a Special Grade sorcerer. His strength was demonstrated during the Shibuya Incident, where he decisively defeated Yuji Itadori in battle. Subsequently, he further proved his prowess by overcoming Naoya Zenin, who had come to assassinate Yuji, showcasing his tactical skill and raw power.
In the Culling Game arc, Choso's abilities earned him a significant role as a bodyguard for Master Tengen, a position typically reserved for sorcerers of Special Grade caliber. This appointment solidifies his status as one of the strongest individuals within the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Choso’s Key Relationships
Eso (壊相) and Kechizu (血塗):
Choso's most beloved younger brothers.
Eso: Calm and intellectual in nature, displaying a human-like demeanor.
Kechizu: Resembles a cursed spirit, often expressing raw and primal emotions.
Choso experienced profound grief and rage upon witnessing their deaths. He vowed to avenge them but later came to deeply regret forcing them to "live as curses," believing that his own choices led to their demise. His unwavering love for them serves as the core of his motivation, embodying his creed: "I will risk my life for my brothers."
Yuji Itadori (虎杖悠仁):
During their battle, Choso encountered "fabricated memories" that convinced him Yuji Itadori was his younger brother. Initially shocked, he gradually came to fully embrace Yuji as family. Driven by his newfound determination to "…Using all my strength… I will fulfill my duty as the older brother!!," Choso abandoned all hostility toward Yuji and began acting to protect him.
Choso even forgave Yuji for the deaths of his brothers, recognizing them as "accidental" and not acts of malice. This unique bond reflects Choso's growth and evolving values.
Noritoshi Kamo (加茂憲倫) / Kenjaku (羂索):
To Choso, Noritoshi Kamo—also known as Kenjaku—is the ultimate adversary. Kamo exploited Choso's mother, a woman with a unique constitution capable of bearing cursed spirit-human hybrids, using her to create the nine Death Paintings as part of his experiments.
Choso eventually discovered that Kamo, one of his biological creators, was responsible for the deaths of his brothers. This revelation ignited intense hatred, solidifying Kamo as the unforgivable figure who manipulated his mother and brothers.
During the Shibuya Incident, Choso realized that Kenjaku had possessed Suguru Geto’s body, further intensifying his fury.
Yuki Tsukumo (九十九由基):
Yuki Tsukumo left a lasting impression on Choso with her advice to "live as a human, not as a curse." Her words profoundly influenced Choso's perspective, encouraging him to reconsider his purpose and identity.
Yuki also fought alongside Choso to protect Master Tengen, entrusting him with a significant responsibility before her passing. This bond became a source of strength for Choso, motivating him to move beyond self-sacrifice and explore a path of living with dignity as a human.
Yuki's impact continues to resonate in Choso's journey, serving as a catalyst for his transformation and deeper understanding of his role in the world.
Choso’s Voice Actors
Choso is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa (浪川大輔), a highly respected and versatile veteran in the voice acting industry. Namikawa's talent gained early recognition when he was chosen to voice the protagonist Elliot in the Japanese dub of E.T., a decision personally approved by director Steven Spielberg. He later portrayed John Connor in Terminator, further showcasing his range in dubbing iconic characters.
Beyond dubbing, Namikawa has lent his voice to numerous popular characters across various hit anime series. His extensive experience and nuanced performances make him one of the most sought-after voice actors in the industry.
Choso’s Key Scenes in the Anime
■Cursed Womb: Death Paintings
Choso's initial appearance occurs in a flashback during Eso's recollection. At this time, he is aligned with the cursed spirits alongside Eso and Kechizu, working toward the goal of a world ruled by curses, free of humanity. However, Choso's true motivation lies not in this overarching mission but in protecting his younger brothers.
■Shibuya Incident
Choso participated in the plan to seal Gojo Satoru, working alongside Jogo and Hanami. Although he joined the operation, he displayed little enthusiasm, and his lack of motivation was criticized by his peers. Despite the overwhelming power of Gojo, Choso contributed marginally after Gojo's sealing.
In the Shibuya Station, Choso confronted Yuji Itadori, seeking revenge for the deaths of Eso and Kechizu. This emotional battle highlighted Choso's role as an elder brother, as he questioned Yuji about the final words of his siblings. Despite pushing Yuji to the brink with his overwhelming power, Choso experienced a surge of "fabricated memories," leading him to believe Yuji was also his brother. This revelation caused him to abandon his intent to kill Yuji.
Choso later confronted Kenjaku (Suguru Geto) and discovered his role in manipulating the nine Death Paintings. Overcome with anger, Choso directed his efforts toward protecting his brother Yuji and opposing Kenjaku's schemes.
