What is the Anime Jujutsu Kaisen Where Hiromi Higuruma Appears?

Jujutsu Kaisen (呪術廻戦) is a dark fantasy series that began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018. The story follows Yuji Itadori, a high schooler who enters a world of curses and sorcery after unsealing a powerful “Cursed Object.” The series concluded in September 2024.The Jujutsu Kaisen manga has surpassed 100 million copies in circulation.

The first TV season aired from October 2020 to March 2021, followed by the hit film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in December 2021, which grossed 26.5 billion yen worldwide. The second season aired from July to December 2023, and the third season, Jujutsu Kaisen: Culling Game Part 1, will premiere in January 2026.

■Appearance
Higuruma is characterized by his sanpaku eyes and slicked back hairstyle. He wears a black suit adorned with a lawyer badge. Whether due to his habit of slightly lowering his chin or the emphasis created by his sanpaku eyes, his gaze often appears sharp and intimidating. He gives off a composed yet somewhat detached atmosphere.

■Personality
Higuruma possesses a strong sense of justice and a desire to protect the weak. Referring to the statue of Lady Justice, whose eyes are closed to represent impartiality, he once stated that he alone wishes to keep his eyes open.

Although he generally shows little change in facial expression, when he becomes enraged, his expression carries overwhelming intensity.

Background

Higuruma passed numerous highly competitive examinations in a single attempt, including the entrance exam for T University Faculty of Law and the old national bar examination before the introduction of the law school system. This demonstrates his exceptional academic ability. He is currently affiliated with the Iwate Bar Association.

During his time as a judicial apprentice, he was recommended for appointment as a judge by his supervising instructor but declined the offer. In Japan, it is rare for the courts to actively recruit trainees during their apprenticeship, making this episode a testament to Higuruma’s outstanding talent.

As a practicing attorney, he was assigned to defend Keita Oe, a suspect in a robbery and murder case. Oe had fled during a police questioning, and a knife believed to have been used in the crime was discovered at his home. Circumstantial evidence strongly suggested his guilt.

However, Higuruma believed in Oe’s innocence based on his own convictions. He considered the trauma Oe had suffered from what he viewed as unjust interrogation, as well as the questionable circumstances surrounding the NPO where Oe had worked. In the first trial, Higuruma succeeded in securing a not guilty verdict.

Despite this, public opinion overwhelmingly assumed Oe’s guilt and harshly criticized Higuruma. Influenced by this public pressure, the prosecution pursued an appeal, which ultimately resulted in Oe being sentenced to life imprisonment. Oe, who had once celebrated his acquittal, later cast a resentful gaze even toward Higuruma.

Confronted with his own sense of powerlessness and anger toward a judiciary that he believed prioritized self preservation, Higuruma’s accumulated rage and despair finally erupted. At that moment, his cursed technique manifested, allowing him to conduct a retrial of the case.

Abilities

Higuruma acquired his abilities entirely through self study after the awakening of his cursed technique. In just twelve days, he analyzed his technique, learned to reinforce his body with cursed energy, established his own combat style, and reached a level comparable to a Grade 1 sorcerer.

Within less than two months, he further mastered Domain Amplification and Reverse Cursed Technique at an exceptionally high level. His rapid growth marks him as a true prodigy.

However, because he was not originally born into a sorcerer lineage, he lacks inherited knowledge and traditional instruction regarding his technique. Additionally, as his cursed technique is newly awakened, its full understanding remains incomplete. Due to his natural genius, he rarely struggled in battle, resulting in limited combat experience. In the story, this lack of battlefield experience occasionally led to repeated mistakes.

■Cursed Technique

1. Gavel
The wooden gavel Higuruma carries is itself part of his cursed technique. It functions as the trigger for activating and ending his Domain Expansion. The gavel is also used directly as a weapon in combat.

2. Shikigami Judgeman
Judgeman is a shikigami that resembles a set of scales, evoking Themis, the goddess of justice. In contrast to Higuruma’s statement about wanting to keep his eyes open, Judgeman’s eyes are sewn shut.

It remains completely neutral, siding with neither Higuruma nor his opponent, symbolizing the impartiality of the goddess of justice.

When presenting accusations against the target within the domain, referred to as the defendant, Judgeman shows no emotional fluctuation and maintains a blank expression. However, when sentencing a serious offender to death, it briefly clenches its teeth and displays a moment of anger.

3. Domain Expansion Deadly Sentencing
Deadly Sentencing (JP: 誅伏賜死, Chubuku-Shishi) recreates a simplified courtroom trial and imposes penalties on the target based on the verdict. Unlike most Domain Expansions, it is not activated through a hand sign. Instead, Higuruma initiates it by striking his gavel.

While multiple forms of punishment appear to exist, only two have been revealed in the series.

・Confiscation (JP:没収)
This penalty temporarily disables the target’s cursed technique. It is effective even against opponents who do not possess an innate technique, interfering with their fundamental cursed energy control.

・Death Penalty (JP: 死刑)
Higuruma’s gavel transforms into the Executioner’s Sword. It is stated in the series that anyone cut by this blade will inevitably die without exception.

4. Domain Amplification
During the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, Higuruma used Domain Amplification to neutralize and reduce the slashing attacks of Ryomen Sukuna.

Role in the Culling Game Arc

After Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro recruited Kinji Hakari as an ally, they investigated the point totals of other players. It was revealed that only Hajime Kashimo and Hiromi Higuruma had earned more than 100 points.

In order to negotiate the addition of a new rule, Yuji and the others began searching for Higuruma. Eventually, Yuji confronted him directly.
