Why Are the Packages Black and White?
Calbee explained that the packaging change was introduced as a temporary measure following instability in the procurement of certain raw materials caused by heightened tensions in the Middle East.
To prioritize a stable product supply, the company revised the packaging specifications of 14 products, including Potato Chips, Kappa Ebisen, and Frugra. The number of printing ink colors used on the packages was reduced to two, and the updated designs have gradually appeared in stores since the week of May 25.
Calbee emphasized that the change affects only the packaging and has no impact on product quality.
The company stated that it will continue responding flexibly to changes in the business environment, including geopolitical risks, while maintaining the safety, quality, and reliability of its products.

A Challenge for Calbee, an Opportunity for Creators
While the monochrome packaging was introduced as a practical response to supply chain concerns, it has unexpectedly become a source of inspiration for artists.
Online, more examples of doodles and illustrations drawn on the packages continue to gain attention. What may have begun as a challenge for Calbee has evolved into a unique creative opportunity for illustrators who see the blank spaces as an invitation to create.
