About Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, based on the manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday since April 2020, tells a post-epic fantasy story of the elf mage Frieren after the Hero’s party has defeated the Demon King. The manga has earned critical acclaim, winning the Manga Taisho 2021 Grand Prize, and has surpassed 30 million copies in circulation.

Genau Profile

Genau is a First Class Mage affiliated with the Continental Magic Association. He first appears in the First Class Mage Selection Exam arc as the proctor of the first stage of the exam. He is also one of the disciples of the great mage Serie, the founder of the Continental Magic Association.


The name Genau is derived from the German word Genau, which means exactly or that is correct.

Appearance and Personality

Genau is highly cold and pragmatic. Having witnessed countless deaths, he adopts a ruthless attitude that does not shy away from sacrifice if it is necessary to achieve his objectives. However, his inner world is far more complex.

He has a self punishing side. While he affirms his own way of life, he questions the reality in which kind hearted individuals die before others. He harbors self loathing and a sense of guilt over the fact that someone as cold as himself continues to survive.

He also shows an awkward form of kindness. When his homeland was destroyed, he mocked himself by claiming that he felt nothing. Yet he remained alone in the village to protect the corpses from demons, demonstrating both responsibility and indignation. After witnessing this, Stark described him as a good person.

Regarding his view on combat, Genau once stated that anyone who enjoys fighting is not a decent person. At the same time, he has a battle driven side, finding a sense of exhilaration in surviving desperate situations. His partner Methode even referred to him as a negative example in this regard.

Genau possesses combat ability that ranks among the very best of humanity, with especially deep knowledge and experience in fighting demons.

Digardnacht
His primary spell is Digardnacht, a magic that manipulates black gold wings. From his back, he manifests sturdy black wings that he can control freely. These wings serve both offensive and defensive purposes. They can unleash sharp slashes, deflect powerful attacks from demons, and even enable him to fly.

Bird Familiar Magic
He also uses a reconnaissance oriented spell that allows him to send out birds and share their field of vision.

Exceptional Physical Ability
Although a mage, Genau excels in close combat. He has the reflexes to engage in swordplay with a demon general and possesses remarkable resilience, recovering from severe injuries faster than most warriors.

Role in the Story

■First Class Mage Selection Exam
As the proctor of the first stage, Genau assigned the task of capturing the Stille, a rare bird made of meteoric iron. He coldly assessed the abilities of the examinees and was quick to notice the abnormal presence of Frieren when she broke through Serie’s barrier.

■Subjugation of Demons in the Northern Plateau
After the exam, Genau was ordered by Serie to head to the Northern Plateau alongside Methode to exterminate demons. There, he confronted the demon general Revolte, the one responsible for destroying his homeland.
