Kisho Taniyama
Wirbel is voiced by Kisho Taniyama, a veteran Japanese voice actor known for his wide range of roles. His notable performances include Natsuki Shinomiya in Uta no Prince sama and Jean Kirstein in Attack on Titan.
Overview
At the time of his appearance, Wirbel is a Second Class Mage and serves as the captain of the Northern Magic Corps, a unit tasked with defending his homeland and fighting the remnants of the Demon King’s army.
According to the great mage Serie, he is “the most combat oriented among all Second Class Mages.”
His name, Wirbel, comes from the German word meaning “whirl” or “vortex.”
Wirbel himself remarks that he was “in his twenties until recently.” Based on a flashback line referencing events from 29 years ago and the fact that he was around four or five years old at the time, he is estimated to be in his mid thirties.
Appearance and Personality

With his sharp eyes and rough facial features, Wirbel initially appears like a delinquent. He often wears a faint grin and gives off an aggressive air. In reality, however, he is consistently calm, cautious, and level headed.
Despite his intimidating look, he shows kindness, such as helping an elderly woman in need. When parting ways with Frieren in Oisast, he even offers thoughtful advice, saying that one should cherish every encounter. This reveals his true nature as a dependable, older brother type figure.
Having grown up in the demon infested northern regions and experienced wars between nations, Wirbel views magic strictly as a tool for killing. His participation in the First Class Mage Exam is driven by his desire to obtain even more powerful magic.

While he states without hesitation that he has carried out necessary killings during war, he also believes that if there is an option other than killing, it should be chosen whenever possible.
He is also highly responsible and compassionate toward his allies. During the first exam, he refuses to abandon Ehre and Scharf even after they are defeated.
Abilities

Wirbel specializes in Sorganeil, the spell known as the magic that restrains those he sees.
This spell binds any person or animal within his field of vision. The affected target loses not only physical freedom but also the ability to manipulate mana, leaving them almost completely defenseless and vulnerable to death.
However, the spell requires Wirbel to continuously keep the target’s entire body within his sight. Closing the distance or obstructing his vision can counter it, making the spell unsuitable for large scale group battles.

■First Class Mage Exam: First Test
Wirbel is placed in the same party as Ehre and Scharf. When he targets Fern’s fourth party, he confronts Ubel. Although Wirbel gains the upper hand, he ultimately withdraws after Fern intervenes.
Between exam sessions, he accepts external requests and searches for a frontline fighter. After noticing Stark, he aggressively attempts to recruit him. Wirbel highly values Stark’s abilities and continues to invite him to join his unit even after the exam concludes.
