Background

Eisen and Himmel

Eisen and Himmel

Eisen was the warrior of the Hero Party that defeated the Demon King, traveling alongside Hero Himmel, Priest Heiter, and Mage Frieren.

He carries a tragic past. His home village was attacked by demons, and his family was killed. Perhaps because of this experience, Eisen initially took a critical stance toward Himmel’s belief that he wanted the journey to be something they could laugh about afterward, a fun adventure despite the state of the world.

However, over the course of their ten year journey, Eisen’s perspective gradually changed. By the end, he came to look back on it as a silly yet truly enjoyable journey.

Appearance

The most distinctive features of Eisen’s appearance are his horned helmet, reminiscent of a Viking warrior, worn low over his eyes, and his long white beard that covers much of his face.

As a dwarf, Eisen has a short stature and is even shorter than Frieren. Despite his small frame, his body possesses an extraordinary level of toughness, perfectly reflecting the meaning of his name, which comes from the German word for iron.

Because dwarves are a far longer lived race than humans, Eisen’s appearance showed very little change even when he reunited with his former companions fifty years after the Demon King’s defeat. In stark contrast to the visibly aged Himmel, Eisen appeared almost unchanged.

Personality

Eisen is generally quiet and serious, often acting as the level headed straight man within the highly individualistic Hero Party. His reserved nature made him a stabilizing presence among his more expressive companions.

However, despite his stern appearance, Eisen also has a playful side. One notable example shows him joyfully running around with Heiter like a child after seeing a field of flowers created by Frieren’s magic, even making flower crowns together.

Eisen openly acknowledges himself as a coward. He states that a warrior is someone who remains standing until the very end and that he survived because he was afraid. Having lost his family when demons destroyed his home village, Eisen originally held a characteristically dwarven, pragmatic view of death, believing that people simply return to nothing after dying. This outlook sometimes caused him to view Himmel’s optimism with cold skepticism.

Over the course of their ten year journey, however, Eisen’s perspective gradually changed. Although he may appear gruff and unsociable on the surface, he is deeply compassionate at heart. He continued corresponding faithfully with Heiter until Heiter’s death, demonstrating his loyalty and sincerity.

Later, when speaking to his disciple Stark, Eisen described their past adventure as a very silly yet deeply enjoyable journey. This reflection reveals how much he cherished the time he spent with his companions and how profoundly those shared experiences shaped his life.

Abilities

Himmel, Frieren, Eisen

■the Strongest of Humanity
Eisen is the dependable frontline warrior of the Hero Party, capable of wielding a massive axe with ease. His strength was so overwhelming that Rivale, an executive of the Demon King’s army, praised him as the strongest warrior among humanity.

Despite this reputation, Eisen himself remains humble. He once stated that he is not the strongest human and that those stronger than him simply died. To Eisen, true strength as a warrior lies in surviving until the end.

■Unnatural Durability
The name Eisen means iron in German, and his body lives up to that meaning and perhaps even surpasses it. Throughout the story, Eisen displays feats of durability that border on the biologically impossible.

・Poison immunity
Even after being struck by a highly toxic arrow powerful enough to incapacitate a dragon, Eisen remained completely unfazed.
No fall damage: As long as it is free fall, Eisen can survive being slammed into the ground from any height without suffering injury.

・The secret to his toughness
When asked why he is unharmed, Eisen simply answers with spirit or sheer willpower, relying on a mindset that defies logic rather than any scientific explanation.

His toughness is so extreme that even Heiter, the party’s priest and healer, was frequently left speechless by it.

■Physical Ability Even in Old Age
Although Eisen retired from active duty decades after the Demon King’s defeat, claiming that he was no longer at an age where he could swing an axe, his physical abilities remain extraordinary.

・Superhuman strength
He can effortlessly lift massive boulders blocking the road.

・Running on water (anime original)
In an anime original scene, Eisen is shown sprinting across the surface of water without sinking, further emphasizing his almost inhuman specifications.

These feats reinforce the idea that Eisen’s abilities go beyond those of ordinary humans, or even living beings.

Because Eisen’s abilities were so exceptional, he inadvertently became Frieren’s standard for what a warrior should be. As a result, Frieren came to believe that warriors are beings who can survive falling from extreme heights without dying.

This misunderstanding led her to expect the same level of durability from Stark and other warriors, creating an unintended and somewhat humorous side effect of Eisen’s overwhelming strength.

Relationships

Himmel Party

■Himmel
At first, Eisen was sometimes critical of Himmel’s ideal of wanting their journey to be something they could laugh about after it was over. Due to his tragic past and his realistic outlook on the world, Eisen initially viewed Himmel’s optimism with skepticism.

However, over the course of their ten year journey, Eisen was deeply influenced by Himmel’s beliefs. In the end, he came to cherish their time together, later describing the journey as silly yet truly enjoyable.

■Heiter
As the party’s priest and healer, Heiter was often the most shocked by Eisen’s absurd level of durability. Despite this, the two shared an extremely close bond.

They are shown joyfully running around like children in the field of flowers created by Frieren’s magic, and Eisen continued faithfully exchanging letters with Heiter until Heiter’s death. Their relationship reflects Eisen’s deep loyalty and emotional warmth.

■Frieren
For Frieren, Eisen became the standard by which she judged all warriors. Because of this, she developed the mistaken belief that warriors are beings who do not die no matter how great the fall.

After Himmel’s death, Eisen advised Frieren to journey toward Aureole, the land where souls rest. In doing so, he became one of the key figures who gave Frieren the push she needed to begin her new journey.

Eisen with his disciple Stark

■Stark
Eisen took in Stark, who shared the same fate of losing his home village to demons and being the sole survivor. Eisen raised him as his disciple and trained him to become a warrior.

During training, Eisen was frightened by Stark’s immeasurable potential and struck him reflexively, causing a falling out between them. Despite this, Eisen loved Stark deeply. When entrusting Stark to Frieren and her companions, Eisen revealed his clumsy yet sincere parental affection by recalling how he could never forget the taste of the hamburger Stark once made for him on his birthday.

Role in the Story

■Training His Disciple and Guiding Frieren

After retiring from active combat, Eisen took in Stark as his disciple. Like Eisen himself, Stark had lost his homeland to demons. Eisen trained him to become a warrior, recognizing his immense potential.

During training, however, Eisen became frightened by Stark’s latent strength and struck him reflexively. This incident caused a falling out between them, leaving their relationship strained for some time. Even so, Eisen never stopped caring deeply for Stark.

When Stark later joined Frieren’s journey, Eisen sent him off with the hope that his disciple would experience the same kind of silly and enjoyable journey that Eisen himself once shared with Himmel and the others.

Eisen also played an important role in guiding Frieren toward her new path. By helping her search for the journals of the great mage Flamme, he provided a crucial signpost that set her on a journey to better understand humans and their hearts.
