Background

Serie and a young Flamme

■Early Life and Apprenticeship
Flamme lost her hometown and both parents to demons, leaving her as the sole survivor. During her childhood, she was discovered by Serie, an elven great mage who stood at the top of the Continental Magic Association. Recognizing Flamme’s talent, Serie took her in as a disciple and raised her as a mage.

■The Spread of Magic Among Humanity
At the time, magic was feared and avoided in human society, as it was considered a technique belonging to demons. Flamme worked to change this perception by persuading the emperor of the Unified Empire to officially recognize magical research. She also took part in the education of court mages.

Through these efforts, magic gradually spread throughout human society, ushering in an era in which anyone could use magic. As a result, Flamme came to be known as the founder of human magic.

Appearance and Personality

■Discrepancy Between Reality and Legend
Although Flamme was actually a human woman, the passage of time turned her into a legendary figure. In later generations, statues created in her honor, such as those found in the Northern Empire, depict her as a mature man. As a result, even her gender became unclear in historical portrayals.

■Personality
Flamme was eccentric and sarcastic, often described as a difficult and twisted person. Frieren referred to her as unpleasant as ever. She sometimes gave biased and unconventional lessons, such as teaching flirtatious gestures like blowing kisses or introducing potions that dissolve clothing.

Frieren, who was inexperienced in matters of romance, continued to take these teachings seriously even a thousand years later.

At the same time, Flamme was caring, loyal, and warmhearted. She deeply loved magic and dreamed of a peaceful world where magic could be used by everyone, not just a select few.

■Hatred Toward Demons
Due to her tragic past, Flamme harbored intense hatred toward demons, to the point of wishing for their complete eradication. However, she understood that she herself would not be the one to defeat the Demon King and achieve lasting peace.

Abilities

Flamme and Frieren

Flamme was a legendary mage whose abilities were acknowledged even by her master, Serie. Serie once stated that Flamme had the potential to surpass her.
The barriers Flamme constructed remain intact even after one thousand years, demonstrating their extraordinary strength and sophistication.

■Combat Style
Flamme developed a combat style that involved suppressing her own mana to the extreme. By doing so, she deliberately caused enemies to misjudge her true strength, luring them into a false sense of security before defeating them with surprise attacks.

Because demons are highly sensitive to mana, this deceptive strategy was particularly effective against them.

Flamme openly embraced tactics that could be seen as dishonorable, stating that it was acceptable for only them to be viewed as cowards if it meant defeating demons.

■Foresight and Insight
Flamme possessed exceptional insight and foresight. She predicted that Frieren would one day wish to understand humans.

For that reason, she left behind handwritten records concerning Aureole, the resting place of souls where it is said that one can communicate with the dead.

■Meeting Frieren and Her Final Years
Flamme encountered Frieren after the elf mage was seriously injured in battle against demons. Seeing Frieren’s exceptional talent, Flamme accepted her as her only disciple.

Approximately fifty years after their meeting, Flamme realized that her life was nearing its end. Before passing away, she taught Frieren her final spell, the spell to produce a field of flowers, and encouraged her by saying that Frieren would one day become someone capable of defeating the Demon King. Flamme then passed away peacefully.

Following her final wishes, Frieren later used magic to surround Flamme’s grave with a field of flowers.

■Foundation of Magic Civilization
By spreading magic throughout human society, Flamme laid the foundation for the modern magic civilization depicted in the series.

■Purpose of the Journey
Flamme’s writings about Aureole became the destination of Frieren’s journey, as Frieren wished to speak with Himmel once more.
