Qual is one of the most formidable demons to appear in Frieren Beyond Journey’s End. Known as the Elder Sage of Corruption, he represents a turning point in the history of magic and humanity’s struggle against demons.

Name: Qual
Alias: Elder Sage of Corruption
Voice Actor: Hiroki Yasumoto
Name Origin: Derived from the German word “Qual,” meaning agony or torment.
Status: Qual was one of the most powerful mages in the Demon King’s army. Frieren, who has lived for over one thousand years, once acknowledged him as an opponent superior to herself.

Qual is voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto.

He is known for his roles as Yasutora Sado (Chad) in BLEACH, Aobōzu in Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, and King in One Punch Man.

Background

During the era when Hero Himmel and his party were active, Qual unleashed overwhelming devastation. In the regions he attacked, it is said that forty percent of adventurers and seventy percent of mages lost their lives to him.

Even Himmel, renowned for his exceptional combat ability, was unable to defeat Qual outright. Instead, the party resorted to sealing him away. Frieren herself once stated that she had lost eleven times to opponents with less mana than her, and Qual was one of those rare individuals.

Appearance and Personality

Unlike most demons, who imitate human appearances in order to deceive people, Qual possesses a grotesque and inhuman form. This abnormal appearance is often interpreted as evidence of his extreme age, even among demons.

In terms of personality, Qual is calm, diligent, and highly intelligent. Upon learning that his magic had been thoroughly analyzed by humans, he showed no panic and immediately began reassessing the situation. He also displays an unusually high level of social awareness for a demon, expressing concern for the Demon King’s fate immediately after his revival and even demonstrating a sense of humor. His greatest trait is flexibility, as he shows no attachment to outdated techniques and readily accepts new developments. For this reason, he is often described as a true genius.

Abilities

Qual’s analytical skills and learning speed are extraordinary. He instantly identified the weakness of modern defensive magic, namely its high mana consumption, after seeing it only once. In the anime adaptation, he even reproduced the defensive spell himself after a single observation.

His adaptability is equally remarkable. Despite being sealed for eighty years, he nearly caught up with the evolution of magical technology within just a few minutes after reviving, less than three minutes in the anime portrayal.

His raw combat ability was so overwhelming that even modern mages such as second class mage Ehre would likely have been unable to defeat him.

Magic Used by Qual

Zoltraak: The Spell to Kill Humans

Zoltraak is the first known piercing magic in history and was originally developed by Qual.

This spell is specialized for killing humans and combines immense destructive power, the ability to bypass magical resistance, high efficiency, and exceptional speed. Ironically, while Qual remained sealed, humans thoroughly analyzed this spell and incorporated it into their magical system, where it became standardized as a basic offensive spell.

Qual himself could apply Zoltraak flexibly, using both saturation attacks that overwhelm opponents with numbers and concentrated high output strikes depending on the situation.

Related Characters

Frieren once suffered defeat at Qual’s hands and holds deep respect for his magical talent despite being enemies.

■Fern

■Macht of the Golden Land
One of the strongest demons among the Seven Sages of Destruction and a personal friend of Qual.

Role in the Story

Upon reviving, Qual learned that his signature magic had become a common offensive spell and that humans had developed defensive magic to counter it. He immediately analyzed the structure and weaknesses of this defense and pushed Fern to the brink.

In the end, while focusing his attacks on Fern, he left an opening that allowed Frieren to defeat him using her own modified version of Zoltraak, a spell specialized for killing demons.

Although defeated early in the story, Qual is not regarded as a mere disposable antagonist. His potential for growth and the danger he posed are highly praised by readers, who sometimes refer to him respectfully as “Mr. Qual.” Without his existence, humanity may never have gained the time needed to develop advanced offensive and defensive magic, making him a figure who profoundly influenced human history for better or worse.
