Stark Profile

Stark

Stark

Stark is a human warrior whose name is said to derive from the German word Stark, meaning strong.

He belongs to the human race and works as a frontline fighter who specializes in close combat. At the time of his first appearance, which takes place 28 years after the death of the hero Himmel, Stark is estimated to be between 16 and 17 years old. One year later, 29 years after Himmel’s death, he celebrates his 18th birthday.

Stark is the same age as Fern, though he was born slightly earlier due to differences in their birthdays.
His mentor is Eisen, the dwarf warrior who once fought alongside Himmel in the hero’s party.

Background

■Stark’s Early Life and Tragic Past
Stark was born in the Warrior Village located in the Central Lands. The village was home to a renowned lineage of elite warriors, but Stark himself was treated as a failure by his father. He constantly lived in the shadow of his exceptionally talented older brother Stoltz and endured neglect and harsh comparisons.

The only person who believed in Stark was Stoltz. Secretly training him behind their father’s back, Stoltz supported his younger brother and even celebrated Stark’s birthdays by cooking hamburgers for him. Stoltz was Stark’s sole emotional support.

When the village was attacked by demons, Stoltz ordered Stark to survive and forced him to flee. Stark alone survived the massacre and carried deep guilt for being the only one left behind. However, this survival was the result of Stoltz sacrificing himself to protect his brother.

Stark and Eisen

Stark and Eisen

■Training Under Eisen
After losing his home and family, Stark wandered aimlessly until he was taken in by Eisen, the former warrior of the hero’s party. Eisen sympathized with Stark, having also lost his own homeland, and accepted him as a disciple.

Eisen trained Stark relentlessly, passing down all of his combat skills and experience. Through this period, Stark developed the foundation of his overwhelming physical strength and warrior instincts.

■The Truth Behind the Separation and the Scar
Stark’s relationship with Eisen was severed after a single incident. During a real battle against monsters, Stark froze in fear and refused to fight. Eisen struck him in anger, and the two parted ways after a heated confrontation. The scar on Stark’s forehead was inflicted during this incident.

Stark believed that Eisen had abandoned him out of disappointment in his cowardice. However, the truth was the opposite. Eisen was unconsciously terrified by Stark’s immense pressure and latent potential. Even as a veteran warrior, Eisen reacted instinctively to Stark’s overwhelming presence, which led to the strike.

Stark, Frieren, Fern

■Three Years as the Village Hero
After leaving Eisen, Stark eventually arrived at a village near the Riegel Gorge. When the village was threatened by a Red Mirror Dragon, Stark once again froze in fear and stood motionless.

The dragon misinterpreted this as the composure of a superior warrior and retreated on its own. As a result of this misunderstanding, Stark was praised as the village hero. He remained in the village for three years, caught between the villagers’ expectations and his own fear of the dragon’s return.

■Meeting Frieren and Beginning the Journey
Twenty eight years after Himmel’s death, Frieren and Fern visited the village. Having heard about Stark from Eisen, Frieren invited him to join her party as their frontline warrior.

Appearance

Stark

Stark

Stark’s most distinctive features are his red hair with a darkened crown and the large scar on his forehead. This scar was inflicted during his training with his mentor Eisen. He usually hides it with his bangs, but it can be seen during battle scenes or when the wind blows.

■“Small”
His sharp eyes tend toward a sanpaku gaze, and Fern sometimes describes him as having a villain like face. While his silent expression can feel intimidating, Stark frequently shows timid or comedic reactions in the story, so he rarely gives others a sense of fear.

Stark is about a head taller than Fern. Although he appears slim when clothed, he trains constantly as a warrior and has a well toned and muscular body beneath his clothes.

The keyword “small,” which is often discussed among fans, comes from a scene in which Fern uses a spell that allows her to see through clothing and comments on Stark. There are differing interpretations of this line. Some take it literally, while others argue that Fern’s frame of reference was limited to adults such as her guardian Heiter, making Stark appear small by comparison rather than in absolute terms.

Personality

Stark

Stark

At his first appearance, Stark is portrayed as cowardly. When facing powerful enemies, his legs tremble and he often mutters that he wants to run away.

However, despite his fear, Stark possesses strong inner resolve and the ability to fight for the sake of others. At heart, he is kind, sincere, and compassionate. He cannot ignore people in need and frequently helps townsfolk during his travels. Even during short stays, he quickly builds friendships, and it is not uncommon for many people to see him off when he leaves a town.

Abilities

■Combat Style
Stark wields a massive axe as his primary weapon. His basic fighting style involves enduring enemy attacks with his tough body or narrowly evading them, then delivering a single heavy blow when an opening appears.

Because of his timid nature, his movements tend to be stiff at the start of a battle. However, once he steels himself, he demonstrates destructive power great enough to defeat the Red Mirror Dragon, also known as the Solar Dragon, on his own. This is a level of strength that even Frieren considers dangerous enough to require restraining.

■Abnormal Durability and Recovery Ability
Stark’s most remarkable trait is his incomprehensible level of durability, inherited from his mentor Eisen. The story depicts multiple inhuman feats.

He survives having his head bitten by the Red Mirror Dragon without injury. When Fern asks why he is still alive, Stark himself answers that he does not know.

He recovers within days after suffering a severe wound in which his abdomen is pierced during a battle with demons. Soon after, he resumes training as if nothing happened.

Even after being struck by a highly lethal poisoned arrow that would kill instantly with only a scratch, he continues running at full speed and proceeds to fight.

During training, he withstands a full powered axe strike from Eisen directly to his abdomen, escaping with only a shallow wound.

Stark considers his own toughness to be normal because Eisen was even more durable. However, to ordinary people such as Fern and Heiter, his level of endurance is so extreme that it is genuinely frightening.

■Fern
Fern is a mage and Stark’s traveling companion of the same age. In daily interactions, Fern often responds harshly to Stark’s cowardly remarks and may look at him with clear disdain.

At the same time, there is a strong sense of trust between them, and the story frequently depicts moments in which they are conscious of each other as members of the opposite sex.

One notable example is the Mirror Lotus bracelet that Stark gives Fern for her birthday. The flower used in its design carries the meaning eternal affection and is traditionally given to a romantic partner. Stark chose it without knowing this meaning, but Fern treasures the bracelet.

Their relationship is also obvious to those around them. They argue over trivial matters, quickly make up, and spend time together that resembles dates. Seeing this, the priest Sein internally shouts that they should just start dating already.

■Frieren
Frieren is an elf mage and the leader of the party. After hearing about Stark from Eisen, she recruits him as the group’s frontline fighter.

Stark’s Role in the Story

■ vs Solar dragon
While staying in a village along the Riegel Gorge, Stark was revered as the village hero for three years. He was believed to have driven away a dragon simply by staring it down. In reality, he was unable to move due to fear.
After meeting Frieren and the others, Stark resolves himself and challenges the Red Mirror Dragon alone. He defeats it with a single axe strike, a decisive victory that leads him to join Frieren’s journey.

■vs Linie, a Demon Under Aura
During the Guillotine Aura arc in the Granat domain, Stark fights Linie, a demon directly under one of the Seven Sages of Destruction serving Aura.

Linie uses magic that records and imitates an opponent’s movements, perfectly copying the combat style of Stark’s mentor Eisen. Stark struggles against these familiar techniques, but because he understands the true weight of Eisen’s attacks and relies on his overwhelming toughness, he endures the assault and defeats Linie with a counterattack called Searing Sky Strike.
