Background

Serie is a legendary mage who has lived since the mythological era and was once the mentor of the human great mage Flamme. Approximately one thousand years ago, Flamme entrusted her with the task of educating court mages as part of her last will. Serie rejected this request, believing that magic should remain a privilege reserved only for the gifted, and she tore up the will.

But, Serie founded the Continental Magic Association about half a century before the First Class Mage Examination in the story, specifically around 20 years after the death of the hero Himmel. Through this organization, she seeks to cultivate refined and exceptional mages reminiscent of those forged during the era of war against the Demon King.

Appearance and Personality

■Appearance
Like Frieren, Serie is an elf with the appearance of a young girl.

■Personality
She is unusually combative and ambitious for an elf, speaking in a domineering manner and rarely using polite language regardless of whom she addresses. Serie possesses extraordinarily sharp intuition, to the extent that Frieren herself states that Serie’s instincts are always correct.

While she may appear cold and ruthless, Serie has a deeply compassionate side. She vividly remembers the personalities and favorite spells of every disciple she has ever taken, including those who never made a name for themselves in history. She has stated that she has never once regretted taking on a disciple.

Abilities

Serie is said to have mastered nearly all magic that has existed throughout human history and is revered as the mage closest to an omniscient and omnipotent goddess.

She possesses an overwhelming amount of mana that far surpasses Frieren’s. Even while heavily restricting her mana, her output is comparable to Frieren when Frieren fully releases her own restraints.

When Serie limits her mana, the resulting fluctuation is so perfectly controlled that even Frieren and the first class mage Lernen are unable to detect it. Fern is the only one shown to instantly perceive this subtle distortion.

Spells

As the “living grimoire” who knows almost all magic in human history, Serie can wield an extraordinary range of spells.

■Spell to transfer a spell
A spell that transfers magic. Serie can grant one spell of the recipient’s choosing to those who pass the first class mage examination. This allows the recipient to instantly use magic that would normally take a lifetime to master.

■Spell That Cleans Clothes Completely
A legendary spell from the mythological era, granted to Fern as a privilege after she passed the first class mage examination.

Basic Magic: Serie can also use foundational spells such as flight and defensive magic with an exceptionally high level of mastery.

Related Characters

■Flamme
Her bond with her first disciple, Flamme, is particularly complex. Serie refers to Flamme as a failure who never reached her level, yet at the same time acknowledges her as the only disciple who managed to leave a lasting mark on history. Around one thousand years ago, Flamme left a will asking Serie to spread magic among humanity. Serie immediately rejected this idea, insisting that magic should remain something special reserved for the truly gifted, and tore up the document on the spot. However, the fact that Serie later founded the Continental Magic Association and began training human mages suggests that, in her own unspoken way, she may have fulfilled her late disciple’s wish.

■Frieren
Her relationship with Frieren, Flamme’s disciple and therefore Serie’s grand disciple, is marked by mutual bluntness and emotional distance. Serie acknowledges Frieren’s immense mana and refined technique, but disapproves of her lack of ambition and her attitude toward magic, which she sees as little more than a hobby. Frieren, on the other hand, openly states that Serie’s intuition is always correct and places a certain trust in her judgment. Although they frequently clash, there is a deep understanding between them as fellow elves who share a long perspective on time and magic.

■Serie
During the First Class Mage Examination, Serie encountered Fern, her great grand disciple, whose talent left a strong impression on her. Fern was the only person able to instantly detect the subtle fluctuation in Serie’s perfectly restrained mana. Deeply impressed, Serie immediately invited her to become a disciple, only to be bluntly rejected with a simple refusal. This unexpected response became a rare and memorable experience for her.

■Lernen
Serie also places great trust in Lernen, one of her earliest disciples after founding the association, despite referring to him mockingly as a timid boy. Beyond those who achieved fame, she remembers the personalities and favorite spells of countless disciples who died without ever being recorded in history. Beneath her arrogant and domineering behavior lies a deep attachment to every student she has ever taught.

Role in the Story

In the anime, Serie first appears in Episode 21, where she is shown in a flashback scene. Her full and direct involvement in the story begins during the First Class Mage Examination arc.

During the First Class Mage Selection Examination, Serie served as the examiner for the third stage, which took the form of an interview. The original examiner, Lernen, concluded that he was unable to properly fail Frieren despite her incompatibility with the association’s ideals, and therefore requested Serie herself to take over the role.

As the interviewer, Serie instantly discerned whether the examinees were intimidated by her overwhelming mana or, conversely, were recklessly attempting to challenge her without understanding the vast gap in power. Using this insight, she failed many candidates, judging not only their magical ability but also their mindset and ambition.

When Fern immediately detected the subtle fluctuation in Serie’s tightly restrained mana, Serie was visibly taken aback and attempted to recruit her as a disciple. Even after Fern firmly refused, Serie acknowledged her exceptional talent, passed her examination, and granted her a privilege.

In contrast, despite Frieren possessing sufficient power to pass, Serie judged that Frieren had failed to become the kind of mage she desired. As a result, she declared Frieren unsuccessful and imposed a punishment that barred her from entering the Continental Magic Association for one thousand years.
