Soyogi Fractal and The Theory of an Ill-Natured Man and AI: Hajime Isayama Returns to Manga After 10 Years
The spin-off manga The Theory of an Ill-Natured Man and AI from the creative project Soyogi Fractal, commemorating voice actor Yuki Kaji's 20th anniversary in the industry, has graced the February issue of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Released today, January 9, the manga features a cover illustration by Hajime Isayama, the renowned creator of Attack on Titan, and center color art by up-and-coming artist Kai Noshigami.
Collaboration Between Kaji and Isayama
This special one-shot is a unique collaboration where Isayama takes on the role of storyboarding (name) while Noshiue handles the intricate illustrations. It's noteworthy that this is Isayama’s first manga project in a decade outside of his work on Attack on Titan. Kaji, who voiced Eren Yeager in the anime adaptation, spearheaded this project with heartfelt respect for Isayama, stating, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Let’s make history together!”
About Soyogi Fractal
Soyogi Fractal is an innovative creative project born from Kaji’s passion for fostering collaborative creativity. The project centers around "Bon Soyogi," a voice synthesis software based on Kaji’s voice. Kaji envisions a platform where creators—professional or amateur—can work together freely, unbound by constraints. The project’s name reflects the fractal-like growth of ideas, resulting in groundbreaking creations.
The Plot of The Theory of an Ill-Natured Man and AI
The story humorously follows an AI that gains self-awareness but is overworked in a toxic corporate environment. For fun, the AI debuts as a VTuber, goes viral, and inadvertently triggers events that threaten humanity’s extinction.
Exclusive Availability
The Theory of an Ill-Natured Man and AI is exclusively available in the February issue of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, which can be purchased in physical stores or through digital platforms like MagaPoke and online bookstores. It will not be sold as a standalone digital chapter.
Comments from the Creators
Yuki Kaji:
"This is our chance! Don't miss it!! Let’s change history together, everyone."
Soyogi Fractal is a project I’ve poured my life into. For its monumental first original work, there was only one person I could entrust it to: the esteemed Hajime Isayama. I am deeply grateful to Isayama-sensei for graciously accepting my request."
Hajime Isayama:
I am participating in this project at the invitation of Kaji-san. It’s been about 10 years since I’ve worked on a manga other than Attack on Titan, and I’m once again realizing how challenging manga creation can be. That said, since I’m not the one doing the actual illustrations, I can draw as many complicated compositions as I want and leave the rest to someone else—it’s absolutely wonderful.
