Historic Godzilla Returns in Projection Mapping at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building: Phase 2 Starts November 30 (Nov. 2024 to Jan 2025)

On November 3, 1954, Godzilla first appeared on movie screens, captivating audiences not just in Japan but around the world. Seventy years since the release of the first "Godzilla" film, the King of Monsters is making another comeback at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building's projection mapping event, "TOKYO Night & Light." The second phase of this Godzilla appearance, titled "TOKYO GODZILLAs," is set to launch at the end of the month (November 30).

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building projection mapping show is part of an ongoing effort by Tokyo to create new nighttime tourism resources that illuminate the city's nightscape. Throughout the year, diverse art is presented on the east wall of the landmark's first main building, combining light and sound. Since spring this year, "Godzilla: Attack on Tokyo" has been playing.

The upcoming second installment, "TOKYO GODZILLAs," features appearances from seven versions of Godzilla, including the beloved original from "Godzilla" (1954), "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" (1995), "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla" (2002), "Godzilla: Final Wars" (2004), "Shin Godzilla" (2016), "Godzilla Minus One" (2023), and "Chibi Godzilla's Counterattack" (2023). Audiences can enjoy the history of Godzilla over the past seventy years, all the way up to a grand finale featuring all the incarnations of the King of Monsters.

The visuals were directed by Kazuhiko Nakagawa, who also directed the previous production, along with Shirogumi Inc., who worked on "Shin Godzilla" and "Godzilla Minus One." The first half of the show is shot using a combination of special effects and CGI, including scenes filmed with a Godzilla suit, while the latter half features fully CGI-created sequences of Godzilla wreaking havoc across Tokyo. The result is an unprecedented Godzilla experience that showcases the latest special effects and CGI technology.

There is also a deep connection between Godzilla and Shinjuku, the district home to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. In "Godzilla" (1984), West Shinjuku served as the battleground where the super weapon "Super X" confronted Godzilla. The first main building of the Tokyo Government Office also appeared in "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" (1991). In 2015, a 12-meter-tall Godzilla head was installed in Shinjuku's Kabukicho district, with Godzilla officially appointed as a tourism ambassador for the area. Shinjuku and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building are deeply linked with Godzilla's legacy.
