Godzilla 4K Remaster Japan Premiere with Director Yamazaki Set for November 3
The original 1954 film Godzilla (directed by Ishiro Honda), which started the Godzilla series, will celebrate its 70th anniversary on November 3. To commemorate this milestone, the Japan premiere of the Godzilla 4K Digital Remastered Version has been confirmed. The screening will take place at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya Screen 1 in Tokyo's Hibiya district, where both "Godzilla Fest 2024" and the "37th Tokyo International Film Festival" are being held.
This Godzilla 4K Digital Remastered Version had its world premiere in February at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival's Classics section, where tickets sold out in a flash.
For the Japan premiere, the film will be screened with English subtitles. Prior to the screening, director Takashi Yamazaki, whose film Godzilla Minus One was released on November 3 last year and grossed over 7.6 billion yen domestically while also winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, will be on stage. Joining him will be Mr. Yoshio Suzuki, who assisted in the creation of the original Godzilla suit as part of the special effects team. Yamazaki shared his excitement: "At last, the original Godzilla will return to the screen in 4K remaster. I'm thrilled to relive the moment when the first Godzilla came to life, a moment that greatly influenced me. I'm also looking forward to hearing from Yoshio Suzuki, who worked on the creation of the first Godzilla. Could new revelations emerge 70 years later? I'm excited to find out."
Details about ticket sales and viewing fees will be announced later on the official websites of the Tokyo International Film Festival, Godzilla’s official X (formerly Twitter), and TOHO Cinemas.
"Godzilla Fest 2024" will be held on November 3, dubbed "Godzilla Day" to mark the release date of the first Godzilla film. The event, celebrating the birth of Godzilla, will be held for the 10th time, including special editions. The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, Japan’s only FIAPF-accredited competitive feature film festival, will run from October 28 to November 6.
