The TV anime "The Elusive Samurai" is set to air on TOKYO MX and 30 other stations nationwide starting July 6th. Alongside this announcement, the second promotional video (PV) has been released, and an extraordinary premiere screening event will take place on June 23rd at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, a location significant to the story.
The released PV showcases Hojo Tokiyuki, who lost everything due to the betrayal of Ashikaga Takauji and the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate in 1333. The PV depicts a shocking scene where the mysterious priest Suwa Yorishige, who rescues Tokiyuki, pushes him off a cliff, saying, "Only when you stand at the edge of death does the hero within you shine." The video raises expectations for the unfolding story, highlighting how the elusive Tokiyuki will navigate this dire situation.
Ahead of the broadcast, a premiere screening event featuring the cast will be held at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, which is closely tied to the story. The event will feature appearances by Asaki Yikawa (as Hojo Tokiyuki), Hinaki Yano (as Shizuku), and Yuichi Nakamura (as Suwa Yorishige).
"The Elusive Samurai" is based on the manga of the same name that began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2021. The manga, created by Yusei Matsui, known for "Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro" and "Assassination Classroom," is his latest work. Set in Kamakura in 1333, it tells the story of Hojo Tokiyuki, the last successor of the Kamakura Shogunate and the "most elusive young warlord." The manga has surpassed 2 million copies in circulation.
Amid the transition from the Kamakura period to the Muromachi period, the boy became a hero through his elusiveness and a legend through his survival. The story focuses on a lesser-known historical figure, depicting the turbulent life of Hojo Tokiyuki, the elusive hero, based on historical facts, interpreted and illustrated by Matsui.
The story begins with the sudden rebellion of Ashikaga Takauji and the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate. The boy, Hojo Tokiyuki, who was supposed to live as the shogunate's successor, loses everything—his family and status—at the age of eight due to this rebellion.
However, Tokiyuki was more adept at escaping and surviving than anyone else. Recognizing this talent, Suwa Yorishige, a priest from Shinano Province, guides him, and the boy embarks on a path to become a hero through his elusiveness. This Southern and Northern Court-era spectacle "fugitive tale" depicts the history of the most elusive young warlord’s wanderings, hiding, and revenge.
