Superman No 1 Sells for 9.12 Million Dollars A Historic Attic Discovery Sets a New All Time Comic Book Record

The Superman No 1 comic book achieved a landmark 9.12 million dollars at Heritage Auctions, marking the highest price ever paid for a comic book. The auction took place during the Comic Books Signature Auction #7427, held on November 20 and announced on December 1 by the Texas based auction house.

The 1939 issue sold this time was discovered last year in the attic of a family home in Northern California. Despite being stored only in a cardboard box with stacks of old newspapers for protection, the book received a remarkable 9.0 grade out of 10 from CGC, the world’s largest third-party comic book grading service.

This 9.12 million dollar sale surpasses the previous comic book record held by Action Comics No 1, the first appearance of Superman, which sold for six million dollars in 2024 with a CGC 8.5 grade.

Heritage Auctions’ comic and comic art category continues to draw global attention from collectors. In 2024 alone, notable sales included Action Comics (six million dollars) and Captain America (750,000 dollars). Japanese manga related lots have also attracted strong interest, such as the Weekly Shonen Jump debut issue of One Piece selling for 6,875 dollars and the debut issue of Dragon Ball selling for 6,000 dollars.
