"Gundam SEED FREEDOM": Director Fukuda and Satoshi Shigeta Address a Simple Question: 'How Does Justice Fit Inside a Z'Gok?'

The third installment of the staff talk event to celebrate the blockbuster success of the theatrical film "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM" (released January 26th), a completely new work in the "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED" series nearly 20 years later, was held in Tokyo on the 23rd.

At the event, a video was shown to commemorate the milestone of 4 billion yen in box office revenue. Created by the CG team, the video starts with a pink Haro and features the Z'Gok, which became a talking point in the movie. It concludes with the Infinite Justice Gundam Type-II appearing, followed by a surprise appearance by pilot Athrun Zala celebrating the success with the message "4 billion surpassed! Full house, thank you."

During the session, Sato posed a question to Director Fukuda and Shigeta, "I have something I want to ask. How does Justice fit inside?" which caused laughter in the venue. Director Fukuda initially explained that Z'Gok's design included gaps, suggesting that the Z'Gok had significant "storage space" in its body. This concept evolved into the final design seen today. Shigeta humorously responded, "How does it fit? Well, it's an anime, so that's all there is to it."

The "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED" series, which first aired in October 2002, is a Gundam TV series from the 21st century spanning 50 episodes. It portrays the struggles and growth of Kira Yamato, a Coordinator, amidst a war between genetically engineered humans (Coordinators) and unmodified humans (Naturals), who are divided into the military factions of ZAFT and the Earth Alliance.

The series not only captivated the existing fanbase but also attracted a significant number of female viewers, achieving a peak viewership of 8.0%. It spurred a second "Gunpla" boom among elementary school students, branding it as the "new generation Gundam series."

Furthermore, the sequel "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY," aired from October 2004, surpassed the previous series with a record high viewership of 8.2% and total package sales of an astounding 4 million units, crossing beyond the scope of a TV anime series with its music and events, making it a sweeping success across Japan.

The storyline of the completely new theatrical film "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM" serves as a sequel to "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY," unfolding a new narrative featuring Kira, Athrun, Shin, and others in a world still marred by conflict.
