Red and White Blood Cells Dance in Shibuya Halloween Party for 'Cells at Work!' Film Release
A Halloween party celebrating the December 13 release of the movie Cells at Work! was held on October 31 in Tokyo’s Shibuya Stream front plaza. Twenty-six extras dressed as red and white blood cells performed a dance to the film’s theme song “50%” by Official HIGE DANDism. DJ KOO (63), who plays a nerve cell in the movie, made a special appearance as “Adrenaline DJ,” energizing the crowd with a live mashup performance titled “survival dAnce_EZ DO DANCE 1031 DJ KOO.”
Actors Mei Nagano (25) and Takeru Satoh (35), who portray the red and white blood cells in the film, joined DJ KOO to discuss behind-the-scenes details. Nagano described the film as “genuinely moving,” noting its inspiring message about valuing one’s health. Satoh also expressed his pride in the film, calling it a “classic that brings a sense of self-appreciation and love for loved ones.”
The movie adapts Akane Shimizu’s hit manga Cells at Work! and its spinoff, Cells at Work! BLACK. The storyline, centered on anthropomorphized cells within the human body, explores the vast and vibrant world inside us. Directed by Hideki Takeuchi (Fly Me to the Saitama, Thermae Romae) and featuring action direction by Takahito Ouchi (Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho), the film showcases the smallest yet most dynamic world from the “human world” perspective, making for a uniquely grand-scale Japanese production.
In addition to leads Nagano and Satoh, the film stars Mana Ashida and Sadao Abe as a human parent-child pair, with an ensemble cast of notable names including Koji Yamamoto, Riisa Naka, Wakana Matsumoto, and Kyoko Fukada portraying cells, bacteria, and other entities. This pre-invitation event was held in a reserved venue space, ensuring a secure Halloween celebration for fans.
