"My Happy Marriage" Season 2 to Air in January Next Year: PV Released Featuring Yuya Uchida, Ryotaro Okiayu, Kikuko Inoue, and Evan Call
The second season of the TV anime My Happy Marriage (Watakon) is set to premiere in January 2025. Along with this announcement, a teaser visual and PV were released, and additional cast and staff members were revealed. Yuya Uchida will play Naoshi Usui, a man who speaks to Miyo with the cryptic words "My beloved daughter." Ryotaro Okiayu will voice Tadakiyo Kudou, Kiyoka’s father, and Kikuko Inoue will voice Fuyu Kudou, Kiyoka’s mother.
As in the first season, animation production will be handled by Kinema Citrus, known for their work on series such as Made in Abyss, The Rising of the Shield Hero, and Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight. Along with returning director Yudai Kubota, Masayuki Kojima, known for works like Forest of Piano and Made in Abyss, will also join the staff. The music will be composed by Evan Call, whose work spans from anime to live-action, including Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and The 13 Lords of the Shogun. The story will depict the complex human relationships and intensifying supernatural battles.
The story is set in a fictional world reminiscent of the Meiji and Taisho periods, where the plot revolves around an unusual love story that begins with a political marriage between Kiyoka Kudou, an elite soldier with a closed-off heart, and Miyo Saimori, a girl raised in an abusive family. In the second season, the conflict surrounding the "Usuba blood" that flows in Miyo’s veins reaches a new phase, testing the love between the two.
The original novel My Happy Marriage by Akumi Agitogi, with illustrations by Tsukiho Tsukioka, was first published under Fujimi L Bunko and has exceeded 8 million copies in circulation. In 2019, a manga adaptation by Rito Kosaka was launched, and it won several awards, including first place in the "Recommended Comics by Nationwide Bookstore Employees 2021" and the "Manga You Want to Read on eBooks" award. A live-action film adaptation starring Ren Meguro (Snow Man) and Mio Imada was released in March 2023, followed by an original stage adaptation in August, with the TV anime airing in July.
Ryotaro Okiayu Comment
I’m feeling as if I’m meeting my son’s fiancé for the first time while recording. She’s just so adorable, and I can’t help but be fond of her (laughs). It doesn’t matter what my son thinks of me. I just want them to be happy. That’s all there is to it! My character's partner has quite a strong personality, but there’s a deep reason for that, and I want to portray Masakiyo’s generosity in accepting that truth.
Kikuko Inoue Comment
I’m thrilled to be part of My Happy Marriage! However, despite my joy, my character Fuyu has a cold and harsh attitude, so I had to steel myself during the recording sessions. She leads a comfortable life thanks to her kind husband, but I feel she harbors a deep sadness within her. As Kiyoka's mother, she has an overwhelming love for him and desires his happiness. I’ll do my best to express her love and devotion fully! Thank you for your support.
Yuya Uchida Comment
I’m honored to voice Naohito Amatsuki. He loves you deeply and will protect his pure, unstained love at all costs. That’s why I will never forgive you. I’m incredibly grateful to have recorded alongside Noriko Hidaka. Even when I think I’m pure, standing next to someone with true transparency makes me realize how stained I am. I feel a strong instinct to protect this purity, no matter what.
Yudai Kubota (Director)
Thanks to the support of so many Watakon fans, we’re about to begin the second season of My Happy Marriage. Alongside the staff who have been with us since season one, and the newly joined staff members, we’ve put all our efforts into bringing out the charm of this series. I hope you’ll enjoy the deeper relationship between Miyo and Kiyoka and the somewhat different storyline compared to the first season.
Masayuki Kojima (Director)
We’re all working hard to make the second season even better than the first, thanks to your support. Please continue to look forward to season two!
Evan Call (Music)
Ever since the first season ended, I’ve been eagerly awaiting season two. I’m so happy that we’ll soon be able to see Miyo and Kiyoka again! For the second season’s music, I’ve composed many tracks that preserve the show’s atmosphere while also evolving from season one. I’ve poured my heart into creating new pieces—whether they be joyful, melancholic, or intense. Please look forward to both the anime and the music!
