[Sanrio Character] The "Eyebrow Effect"? Rare Sanrio Character Pekkle Shines After 30 Years
Eyebrows are one of the most expressive parts of a person's face, revealing emotions and character. Many long-popular characters, such as Hello Kitty, are famously "eyebrow-less," allowing viewers to project their own emotions onto them, whether they are happy or sad. However, in today's social media-driven world, there seems to be an increasing number of characters with expressive features. Pekkle, an eyebrow-bearing duck character created 35 years ago by Sanrio, is once again in the spotlight, and we explore the reasons for his resurgence from an "eyebrow" perspective.

Amid Many "Eyebrow-less" Characters, Manga Longevity Due to Expressiveness
The duck character Pekkle was developed in 1989, the year the Showa era transitioned into the Heisei era. The first product, a gauze handkerchief, was released in February 1990. Pekkle's charm, especially his impressive eyebrows, cannot be overlooked.
At that time, most Sanrio characters, like Hello Kitty and My Melody, did not have eyebrows. According to Pekkle's original designer, "There wasn't a specific rule against eyebrows."
"The designers were tasked with creating a new 'duck' character. When I drew a duck and added eyebrows, it immediately gave him a more human-like appearance. His goofy expression led to ideas for his personality and backstory, such as being kind-hearted yet not a good swimmer," the original designer explained.

Before the internet and social media, character profiles were limited to a few words on items like notebooks or plastic folders. The monthly Sanrio magazine "Ichigo Shimbun" played a significant role in developing these characters' stories.
"Pekkle's manga, 'Ganbare! Pekkle,' ran in 'Ichigo Shimbun' for six and a half years starting in 1991. While many manga series in the magazine changed every year, Pekkle's stayed due to his expressive nature," the original designer said. Pekkle's gentle and helpful nature, even though he isn't a standout go-getter, has become more appreciated, especially since the "Hapidanbui" unit was formed.

Hapidanbui, a unit of six characters from the '80s and '90s aiming for a "V-shaped recovery," was established in 2020. Pochacco, who won second place in this year's Sanrio Character Ranking, has drawn attention to the group's revival.
The Hapidanbui's lively interactions are popular on their X (formerly Twitter) account. Fans especially appreciate Pekkle for his quiet, kind actions, like tidying up after others or diligently serving at parties. "Fans are touched by his motherly kindness," said the Hapidanbui producer.
In June, an illustration of the six characters as wedding party members touched many fans, with Pekkle depicted as a mother gently wiping away tears. "Many commented on how moved they were by the scene," the producer added.
Interestingly, Pekkle became the leader of Hapidanbui through a game of rock-paper-scissors. Fans think his gentle leadership style suits his character.
"When asked why they like Pekkle at autograph sessions, many fans mention his gentle personality, thanks to the influence of Hapidanbui," the original designer noted.
Breaking the "Top 15 Barrier," A Trending Character with Big Impact

Pekkle ranked 11th in the 2024 Sanrio Character Ranking, jumping from 16th place last year and breaking the "Top 15 barrier" that had stood for years. Although he didn't make the Top 10, his resurgence was met with the loudest cheers and reactions at the results event.
Pekkle's rise has been notable this year, trending on X after being announced in the Top 10 during early and mid-rounds of voting. This level of support shows many are rooting for Pekkle.
"I was surprised by this year's results. Many characters debut with numerous products, but after 4-5 years, they often get replaced by newer characters. Pekkle had over a decade without new products, yet fans would bring cherished plush toys from their childhood to signings. Now, there are also many new fans who discovered Pekkle through Hapidanbui. We are truly grateful to both longtime and new supporters," the original designer said.
While Hapidanbui members have seen remarkable comebacks, Pekkle's deep appeal has taken a bit longer to catch on. However, the fans he has gained are likely to remain loyal. With Hapidanbui's 5th anniversary approaching, fans look forward to seeing Pekkle, the motherly leader, continue to thrive, eyebrows raised in joy.
