‘Jujutsu Kaisen ≡ (Modulo)’ Spin-Off Short Series Begins: Gege Akutami and Yuji Iwasaki Team Up for a Near-Future Story

The new spin-off manga Jujutsu Kaisen ≡ (Modulo) launched today, September 8, in issue 41 of Weekly Shonen Jump. The series was created by Gege Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, and Yuji Iwasaki, known for illustrating Cipher Academy. This is Akutami's first serialized work since Jujutsu Kaisen ended in September 2024, and the first time he has been the only writer.

The first chapter of the new series is a spin-off of Jujutsu Kaisen. It appears on the cover of the magazine and is 54 pages long and in full color.

Akutami shared his thoughts on the launch:

"It's been a while. While working on Jujutsu Kaisen, I got offers for spin-offs written by others, but I said no. It felt risky to let the series' name run without my control. Those ideas made me think of ways to expand the world. I could develop this setting, change the timeline, or make it parallel. The most out-of-the-box idea, Modulo, was eventually created after discussions in the editorial department. This will be a short series of about three books, unless it's cut short. The illustrator is Yuji Iwasaki. He is amazing, skilled, and polished. I hope readers enjoy Modulo as a new way to get into Jujutsu Kaisen."

Yuji Iwasaki also shared his excitement:

"I'm honored to receive this offer. When I first saw the storyboards from Akutami-sensei, I honestly wondered if I was the right person for the job. I'm still nervous as I draw, but I'll do my best to deliver a fresh story to Jujutsu Kaisen fans and even readers who are new to it. As someone who reads a lot, I'm thrilled. Since I was given this opportunity, I want to stay true to myself in the art. It will be a short run, but I'm excited to work on it."

Akutami published Jujutsu Kaisen in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2018 to 2024 across 30 volumes, and more than 100 million copies were circulated. Iwasaki illustrated Cipher Academy (written by Nisio Isin) from 2022 to 2024.

The original Jujutsu Kaisen follows high school student Yuji Itadori, who gets caught up in a deadly battle with curses after a powerful cursed object is opened. Since it was first published in 2018, the manga has been adapted into two TV anime seasons and the feature film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made 26.5 billion yen worldwide. The third season, Culling Game Part 1, is set to premiere in January 2026. Yumeaki Hirayama is also working on a new spin-off novel project.
