Revisiting the Legendary Yoshiwara Arc
The film’s story takes place in the underground red-light district of Yoshiwara, ruled by the fearsome “Night King (JP: 夜王, Ya oh)” Hosen. In the teaser trailer, Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura of Odd Jobs Gin step into this city of darkness, with Gintoki declaring: “You can’t put out my flame. You’ll never extinguish ours.”

Alongside the Odd Jobs trio, the trailer features Tsukuyo, Seita, Hinowa, Kamui, and Hosen—characters central to the original Yoshiwara arc. Notably, new appearances were teased: Katsura, Gintoki’s former comrade, and the Shinsengumi members Kondō, Hijikata, Okita, and Yamazaki—who were absent from the manga’s version of this arc. The footage closes with a powerful shot of Gintoki rising within raging flames, hinting at intense battles, dramatic confrontations, and large-scale cinematic storytelling unique to the film. It promises to deliver Gintama’s most explosive episode in upgraded, high-impact visuals on the big screen.

Just as the event was coming to a close, a surprise “20th Anniversary Project” reveal announced that New Gintama The Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames will hit theaters in 2026. Sakaguchi excitedly declared after the trailer:
“Yes, we’re doing a brand-new Gintama movie! The final part of the 20th Anniversary Project is a film. The title is New Gintama The Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames. We’re reconstructing the Yoshiwara arc as a completely new production with entirely new animation. Let’s aim for 10 billion yen at the box office!”
Cast and Creator Reactions
A comment from Sorachi was also read aloud during the event:
“I feel that letting the series go out in a blaze, perhaps due to issues with Sugita’s lower body, would actually be a proper Gintama-style victory.”
In response, Sugita joked: “If anything happens, I’ll just set my hair on fire.”

He later addressed the audience sincerely:
“With Gintama, you never know what’s going to happen. That mix of excitement and anxiety is part of what makes it unique. Please, don’t abandon us!”

Gintama Spinoff Anime Also Announced
It was also revealed that the spinoff novel Class 3-Z’s Ginpachi-sensei (original by Hideaki Sorachi, written by Tomohito Osaki) will receive an anime adaptation, premiering on October 6 at midnight. The narrator will be voiced by Fumihiko Tachiki (as Taizo Hasegawa). At the event’s live recording, Akira Ishida also made a surprise appearance with a voice performance.

Comment from Hideaki Sorachi
“Thanks to everyone’s support, Ginpachi-sensei is being adapted into anime, and once again, a new Gintama movie is in the works. Thank you.
It has been six years since the manga ended, yet the series continues to be exploited as a tool for greedy adults’ pocket money. Watching it squeezed until it loses all flavor, I still find myself thinking it’s a writer’s dream—while looking at my bankbook.
Gintama is rare in that its anime, novels, movies, and live-action all managed—well, at least to look like they managed—to succeed, pulling off a kind of last-minute escape. But at this pace, we won’t be able to stop until it eventually crashes and burns. So perhaps letting it end with a glorious explosion, maybe triggered by Sugita’s lower body issues, would also be a fitting Gintama-style exit.
Please continue to look forward to Ginpachi-sensei, the movie, and also Tomokazu Sugita’s future endeavors.”
