Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since February 2022, the story follows Akane, a girl who was captivated by her father's mesmerizing rakugo performance as a child. Inspired by a life-changing performance, she begins her own journey as a rakugoka (rakugo performer). At 17, her goal is to become a “Shin-Uchi,” the highest rank in rakugo. Creator and Staff Comments Highlight Passion Behind the Anime
Yuki Suenaga (Original Story):
“I’ve drawn many rakugo performances that can only be done in manga—so many that I even doubted whether they could be animated. But after hearing the plans and seeing the progress, I can say it proudly now: this anime can definitely work! The passionate team is bringing Akane-banashi to life with incredible energy. I hope you're as excited as I am to hear Akane’s performance!”
Takamasa Moue (Art):
“I want to tell my childhood self—who couldn’t even write ‘manga artist’ as a dream because of a lack of confidence—that our work is becoming an anime! I’ve met with the producer, director, staff, and cast, and everyone’s enthusiasm is overwhelming. I was even caught for drawing fake backgrounds, but I’m happy! The whole team is trustworthy, and I’m genuinely excited to watch this as a fan!”
Masaru Harima (Assistant Director):
“Akane-banashi is finally in motion! The traditional art of rakugo is fused with Director Ayumu Watanabe’s refined yet powerful direction to create something truly dynamic. We aim to bring both the passion and human drama of the original to life while making it accessible to those unfamiliar with rakugo.”
Kie Tanaka (Character Design/Chief Animation Director):
“I’m thrilled to be involved in the rare opportunity to depict the rakugo world through animation. I’ll do my utmost to help deliver Akane-banashi to a wider audience.”
Michihiro Tsuchiya (Series Composition):
“They say anime is like a fart in the bath—bubbles of excitement rise up! With a touch of anime humor added to the sturdy ‘classic rakugo’ base of the original, I hope to depict Akane’s journey with warmth and wit. Please lend us your ears!”
Akio Izutsu (Music):
“I was both honored and nervous when asked to handle the music for Akane-banashi. It’s going to be a musical challenge, but I hope to express Akane’s growth in the rakugo world with a fresh and powerful sound. I’m looking forward to composing the soundtrack!”
Kikuhiko Hayashiya (Rakugo Supervision):
“Finally, the news is out! After three and a half years of working with Suenaga and Moue, Akane-banashi is becoming an anime! With Director Watanabe and the cast, including Anna Nagase, joining the team, this new chapter in the Akane-banashi world is sure to be exciting. And don’t forget—go experience rakugo live at a yose theater!
