“I never knew that!” Fans Surprised by Inspector Megure’s Real Name and Its Sudden Creation
To celebrate the April 18 release of the new Detective Conan film One Eyed Flashback, Nippon TV’s Friday Roadshow launched a three-week “Conan Festival” starting April 4. The first film aired was Detective Conan: The Fourteenth Target, which sparked widespread attention online when it revealed Inspector Megure’s full name. The official Friday Roadshow X (formerly Twitter) account later shared the story behind the name's origin.

In The Fourteenth Target, Inspector Megure, Eri Kisaki (Ran’s mother and a lawyer), and Professor Agasa become targets of a mysterious assailant. Since the victims all share a personal connection to Kogoro Mouri, Conan deduces that the culprit may hold a grudge against him. Clues left at the crime scenes point to playing cards, and Conan notices a shared pattern among the names of the attacked individuals.

To protect Kohei Sawaki (JP:沢木公平)—a sommelier and Kogoro’s old friend whose name contains the kanji for “eight (八, Hachi)”—Conan and the others head to the ocean-themed amusement facility Aqua Crystal. There, they encounter four people whose names include numbers, hinting at a deeper plot. What is the true motive behind the attacks? And who exactly is the mysterious “Fourteenth Target”? The movie also depicts a pivotal moment from Kogoro’s past, where he accidentally grazed a hostage's leg with a bullet—an incident that led to his resignation as a detective, despite his reputation as a skilled marksman.
In one dramatic scene, Inspector Megure is shot while jogging and hospitalized. It is then that his full name is revealed: Jūzō Megure (目暮十三). Even Conan is taken aback: “So his name is Jūzō...?” Viewers were equally shocked and fascinated by the revelation.

The official Friday Roadshow account provided more background: “According to creator Gosho Aoyama, Megure’s surname was inspired by Jules Maigret, the detective from Belgian author Georges Simenon’s mystery novels. As for his given name, ‘Jūzō’—this is the first time it has ever appeared.”

“So his full name was made just for this movie—amazing!”
“Even Conan didn’t know his name, lol.”
“Finding out Megure’s name is Jūzō was such a nice surprise.”
“I didn’t know his name! And Conan being surprised made it even better.”
The unexpected reveal of a long-hidden detail has delighted both casual viewers and longtime fans alike—proving that even decades into the franchise, Detective Conan still has surprises up its sleeve.
