What Is The After-Dinner Mysteries About?

Set in Kunitachi, Tokyo, the story follows Reiko Hosho, a rookie detective at the Kunitachi Police Department who also happens to be the heiress of the globally renowned Hosho Group. She is accompanied by her sharp-tongued but brilliant butler, Kageyama, who doubles as her driver. Known for his scathing remarks like, “Is your vision failing you, milady?” Kageyama assists Reiko in solving intricate cases with wit and logic in this blend of a classic mystery and biting humor.

First serialized in 2007 in Bungei Post, the novel was published in 2010. Its 2011 live-action adaptation starring Sho Sakurai and Keiko Kitagawa was a hit, followed by a 2013 film. The series has been adapted into manga, stage plays, and more, with total sales exceeding 4.95 million copies.

Author and Illustrator Reactions

Author Tokuya Higashigawa expressed his delight over the upcoming anime:

“As the original author, I am deeply moved. I’m excited to see how the characters, who have so far only existed in my imagination, come to life and speak. I hope fans of the original and mystery lovers alike enjoy this adaptation—and even those unfamiliar with the story.”

Oreco Tachibana’s teaser visual features Kageyama lifting a cloche to reveal Reiko and Inspector Kazamatsuri sitting on a tray, encapsulating the series' unique mix of mystery and satire.
