'YAIBA' Returns with New Anime for the First Time in 31 Years, Airing in April Next Year!

The completely new TV anime Shin Samurai Chronicle YAIBA, based on the manga YAIBA, will begin airing on Yomiuri TV and Nippon TV networks from April 2025 (every Saturday at 5:30 p.m.). This marks the first new anime production in 31 years since the final episode aired in 1994. A new PV and additional cast details were also revealed, featuring Katsuyuki Konishi as Tetsuken Juro and Junichi Suwabe as Musashi Miyamoto.

YAIBA is a manga series created by Gosho Aoyama, known for Detective Conan. The new anime will air in the time slot directly before the currently broadcasting anime Detective Conan (every Saturday at 6:00 p.m.), giving Aoyama's works a continuous one-hour broadcast block.

The newly released second teaser PV features the protagonist Yaiba Kurogane (voiced by Minami Takayama), heroine Sayaka Mine (voiced by Manaka Iwami), and Yaiba's rival Takeshi Onimaru (voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya), along with Yaiba's father KenJuro Kurogane (Katsuyuki Konishi) and the legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto (Junichi Suwabe). The PV also showcases Yaiba wielding the Raijin Sword and Onimaru wielding the Fujin Sword, capturing the intense swordplay between them with dynamic visuals. How will the intertwined fates of Yaiba and Onimaru, each wielding these paired swords, unfold? The PV hints at a grand adventure that awaits Yaiba and his companions.

YAIBA, created by Gosho Aoyama of Detective Conan fame, tells the story of the samurai wild child Yaiba Kurogane, who undergoes rigorous training in the jungle. One day, he returns to Japan by chance and embarks on a new path of samurai training, striving for greater strength. He meets his rival Takeshi Onimaru, and the story follows their spectacular journey, which begins when Onimaru gains possession of the "Legendary Demon Sword."

The manga originally ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday (Shogakukan) from 1988 to 1993 and has sold over 17 million copies in total. The TV anime adaptation aired from 1993 to 1994. This brand-new anime adaptation is the first since the final episode aired in April 1994, with Gosho Aoyama overseeing the storyline in its entirety.
