Inside Out 2 Surpasses ¥50 Billion ($351M) in Japan, Ranks 8th in All-Time Global Box Office
Disney & Pixar’s Inside Out 2, currently in theaters, has grossed ¥50,230,883,350 (approximately $351.73 million) between August 1 and September 22, making it the first foreign film released in 2024 to surpass ¥50 billion in box office revenue (including preview screenings).
The film is a sequel to the Academy Award-winning Inside Out (2015), which explored the world of emotions. In Inside Out 2, Riley, now entering high school, is once again guided by Joy, Sadness, and other emotions. This time, however, a new set of adult emotions, led by Anxiety, shakes things up.
By September 23, the film had outperformed the original’s Japanese box office total of ¥40.4 billion, with cumulative attendance of 3,953,333 viewers and earnings of ¥50,780,492,100 ($355.50 million). Despite the end of summer vacation, the film continues to draw families, teenagers, and adults, ranking 7th in Japan’s latest box office rankings (September 20–22, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha).
Globally, Inside Out 2 has already grossed $1.687 billion (approx. ¥241 billion), making it the highest-grossing film of the year so far. It now ranks 8th on the all-time global box office list, surpassing the live-action The Lion King and Jurassic World. This achievement secures Inside Out 2 a place in film history.
