The Rose of Versailles Art Settings Revealed: 7 Stunning Scenes Including Versailles Palace and Paris Opera House
New information has been released about the upcoming theatrical anime "The Rose of Versailles" (set for a New Year's 2025 release). Today, July 14, marks France's Bastille Day, commemorating the storming of the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, which sparked the French Revolution. In honor of this significant event, seven art settings from the anime, depicting pivotal locations such as the Palace of Versailles and the Paris Opera House, have been unveiled.
The newly released art settings include Marie Antoinette's residence at the Palace of Versailles, the Jarjayes residence where Oscar lives with her family, the historically significant Place de la Concorde in Paris, and the opera house where Oscar, Marie Antoinette, and Fersen meet at a masquerade ball. These stunning settings highlight both the opulence of the era and the emotional intensity of key scenes.
Hideki Nakamura, the art director, commented on the challenges faced during production: "Expressing the luxurious decorations of the grand buildings that adorned aristocratic society, including the Palace of Versailles, required meticulous detail and dedication. This was both a focal point and a challenge for us."
Nakamura added, "We conducted extensive research to recreate the unique interior decorations and the atmosphere of the gardens at the Palace of Versailles. The evolving atmosphere of Paris as it moves towards revolution is also depicted, reflecting the director's vision."
"The Rose of Versailles" is set during the late 18th-century French Revolution and tells the story of Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man to succeed her father as a general, and Marie Antoinette, the innocent queen from neighboring Austria. Amidst the turbulent times, the story explores their love and destinies as they strive to live their lives fully.
Originally serialized in "Weekly Margaret" (Shueisha) from 1972 to 1973, "The Rose of Versailles" was collected into ten volumes, with four new episode volumes released after 40 years in 2014. The series has sold over 20 million copies in total.
Known as a pioneer of media mix, "The Rose of Versailles" was adapted into a stage play by the Takarazuka Revue in 1974, a TV anime in 1979, and a film in 1990, creating a widespread social phenomenon. The upcoming theatrical anime is a completely new production by the acclaimed anime studio MAPPA, known for works like "Jujutsu Kaisen".
