Tomokazu Sugita Reflects on Creating the Character of Gyomei Himejima in "Demon Slayer," Including Losing His Voice During the Demon-Hitting Scene

Himejima as a Leader: The Importance of Trust in Character Creation

— What was important to you in creating this character?

[Sugita] It was crucial to avoid letting people notice any anxiety or impatience. When the Hashira gathered, Himejima naturally took the lead, so I portrayed him in a way that would inspire trust in the character I was playing.

— In the first episode of the "Hashira Training Arc," he naturally took charge.

[Sugita] I think it's essential that his position is naturally decided. If you don't see the whole picture, someone's ideas might scatter. Himejima's role is to move things naturally.

— How has Himejima changed since the Hashira meeting in "Tanjiro Kamado: Unwavering Resolve Arc"? Have there been any changes in your approach as a performer?

[Sugita] I believe it is important to remain unchanging, steadfast, and capable of accepting anything. In thinking about this, not changing or wavering is crucial. As the situation and companions change, Himejima must remain grounded to move forward. I think being in such a position (for Himejima) is essential.

Understanding the Meaning Behind Himejima's Tears

— What challenges or difficulties are unique to portraying Himejima?

[Sugita] While I prepare plans in advance to portray Himejima, how I receive direction, organize, and complete it isn't something that can be achieved by just one actor's performance. That aspect is also important to me.

— Himejima is a character who, despite his stoic demeanor, can be emotional. How did you balance his tearful moments with his unyielding voice?

[Sugita] It's about understanding where his feelings are directed and why he sheds tears. I think Himejima constantly contemplates destroying demons and ensuring such situations don’t recur. This thought process naturally leads to his lines. I always think about the meaning behind Himejima's tears in each situation. There are no meaningless lines or ones said without thought, so I put a lot into my acting.

The "Hashira Training Arc" airs every Sunday at 11:15 PM on Fuji TV and every Saturday at midnight on TOKYO MX, BS11, Gunma TV, and Tochigi TV. The final episode, airing June 30, will be an extended 60-minute special.
