New Gundam Anime Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Announced for 2027, First Trailer and Images Revealed

Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new anime in the Gundam series, has officially been announced for 2027. The first trailer and scene images have also been released. Kenji Kamiyama serves as director and handles series composition, while Takeo Otsuka voices protagonist Ray Azumi.

The anime shares its universe with GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, a video game unveiled at Summer Game Fest in June 2026. A new media mix initiative spanning both titles will be developed under the name RG Project.

The RG Project is a new Gundam initiative in which the anime and game share the same universe while portraying it from different perspectives, positions, and degrees of proximity. Together, they will build a single history.

Taking a different approach from previous Gundam titles, the project reconstructs the fundamental question of why Gundam is necessary. Director Kenji Kamiyama and SF setting supervisor Toh Enjoe have created this new framework. Based on their worldbuilding, the anime and game will share the same universe and history while telling their respective stories from different perspectives.

The anime is set approximately 100 years before the events of the game and tells the story that serves as the origin of this world. The game, meanwhile, takes place in a future shaped by the events and choices depicted in the anime. Players will participate in that history and make new choices of their own.

One experience allows audiences to watch the story. The other allows players to enter the world and become involved in it. Beginning from the present experienced by each audience member or player, the RG Project will weave together the timeline of a single world.

Story of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO

The story is set in a world where three revelations brought from beyond the solar system have ushered in unprecedented prosperity, allowing humanity to expand throughout the entire solar system.

The three revelations are gravity control, faster than light communication, and a technology called Cognitive Materialization, which transforms images into physical matter.
However, less than ten years after its discovery, the Autonomous Interstellar Object that delivered these three revelations suddenly ran rampant and produced an aggressive, self proliferating ecosystem. Humanity came to associate this unknown ecosystem with the Apocalypse.

After three months of conflict, the battle reached a stalemate in orbit above Earth. Humanity was forced to abandon the planet and recorded that year as A.A. 1, the first year of After Apocalypse.

By A.A. 45, children born on the Moon and in space colonies have grown accustomed to living with the Apocalypse as part of everyday life. On the lunar surface, a boy named Ray Azumi awakens.

Gundam ZERO and Ray Azumi Appear in the First Teaser Visual

The first teaser visual depicts the protagonist Ray Azumi alongside his mobile suit, Gundam ZERO.

It presents a boy whose actions could determine the fate of the world and a single mobile suit that will share the burden of his decisions. The teaser trailer offers glimpses of the setting, characters and mobile suits in action, as well as the Apocalypse, conveying the overall atmosphere of the story.

Director Kenji Kamiyama Comments on the New Gundam Anime

“When I was approached about creating a Gundam set in a new timeline that was neither the Universal Century nor the Anno Domini era, I began asking myself all kinds of questions. What would replace the Earth Federation and Zeon? What should we do with the concept of Newtypes? What about Minovsky particles? Where did the war itself go?

“As I kept turning over the question of what makes Gundam truly Gundam, the days stopped being much fun. Then I realized something. I had been given the opportunity to create the Gundam I love from zero in the Reiwa era. How incredible is that?

“Once I began thinking that way, a rather interesting Gundam started taking shape. That is Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO.”
