Yoshiyuki Tomino, Creator of Mobile Suit Gundam, Awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon
The Japanese government revealed the recipients of its spring decorations, with acclaimed anime director Yoshiyuki Tomino, aged 84, selected for this prestigious award. Tomino is widely known as the creator of the landmark anime series Mobile Suit Gundam.

A Pioneer Who Shaped the Foundations of Anime
Born in 1941 in Odawara City, Tomino graduated from the Film Department of Nihon University College of Art. He began his career at Mushi Production, where he worked on the direction of the anime Astro Boy before becoming a freelance creator.
Tomino has directed numerous influential works, including Triton of the Sea, Invincible Superman Zambot 3, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Space Runaway Ideon. As a pioneering figure, he has played a central role in shaping the early development of Japan’s anime industry and continues to be recognized as one of its most important creators.
