Tatsuya Fujiwara Returns as Kaiji in New Live Action Film After Seven Years, Kaiji: Life Revenge Game Set for January 2027 Release

The Kaiji live action film series is returning after seven years. It has been announced that Kaiji: Life Revenge Game, starring Tatsuya Fujiwara, will open in Japanese theaters on January 29, 2027. The film marks the fourth installment in the franchise and follows 2020's Kaiji: Final Game. A teaser poster and special announcement trailer have also been released.

The film is based on Nobuyuki Fukumoto's long running manga series Kaiji, which began serialization in 1996 and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Published by Kodansha, the manga has surpassed 30 million copies in circulation.

Previous live action adaptations have all been major box office successes, including Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler (2009), Kaiji 2: The Ultimate Gambler (2011), and Kaiji: Final Game (2020).

The series has attracted fans with its high stakes survival games and intense human drama. Famous lines such as “It's ice cold!” and “Devilishly good!” remain widely recognized, helping the franchise maintain its popularity years after release.

Tatsuya Fujiwara Returns as Kaiji

Fujiwara reprises his role as Kaiji Ito, the gambling addict often described as Japan's most notorious loser. Returning alongside him are longtime series director Toya Sato and composer Yugo Kanno, bringing together the familiar creative team behind the previous films.

The new movie will feature what is being described as the biggest confrontation in the franchise's history, pitting Kaiji against the powerful Teiai Group. The film will include an updated version of the iconic steel beam crossing challenge, enhanced with modern filmmaking technology, as well as new games inspired by storylines from the original manga.

Kazuya Hyodo Joins as Kaiji's New Rival

A major highlight of the new film is the introduction of Kazuya Hyodo, the son of Teiai Group chairman Kazutaka Hyodo. Kazuya is one of the most popular antagonists from the original manga.

Raised in privilege and wealth, Kazuya represents the ultimate heir, while Kaiji has struggled his way up from nothing. Their clash explores themes that resonate strongly with modern society, including social inequality and the concept often discussed in Japan as the "parent lottery."

The newly released teaser poster features Kaiji standing atop a steel beam with the slogan:
"We're back, you hopeless losers."

Meanwhile, the teaser trailer revives the series' famous atmosphere with the unmistakable "zawa... zawa..." tension effect and showcases Fujiwara once again stepping into Kaiji's shoes as a new deadly battle begins.

Tatsuya Fujiwara's Comment

I cannot tell whether these years passed quickly or slowly, but it was an incredibly intense experience. This time there are several games in the film, and every scene was challenging. The director, the staff, and all of us actors were constantly fighting through situations where the finish line seemed impossible to see.

That said, those struggles helped create many memorable moments, and I believe the film is packed with highlights.

Returning to the world of Kaiji after seven years, I felt once again that the unique atmosphere created by Mr. Fukumoto's ideas and the screenplay remains tremendously entertaining and still resonates with today's audiences.

Technology has also advanced significantly, including CG and VFX. I am very excited to see how the director and visual effects team bring a realistic version of the steel beam crossing challenge to life.

I truly believe audiences will be satisfied with this film, and I hope everyone will come experience it in theaters.

Original Creator Nobuyuki Fukumoto's Comment

Discussions about making Kaiji 4 actually began fairly soon after Kaiji 3 was completed.

However, I kept thinking, "Didn't we call the third movie Final?"

I apologize. We're doing it again. Please let us do it again.

We began by developing the screenplay together with screenwriter Yamaguchi, exchanging ideas and refining the story.

Kaiji 4 incorporates many of the games and contests I have depicted throughout the manga. Tatsuya Fujiwara, the real life Kaiji himself, brings them vividly to life on the screen.

Isn't it about time you wanted to see Tatsuya Fujiwara's Kaiji again?

You do want to see him, right?

Well, now you can.

Please come witness and enjoy it in theaters.

Director Toya Sato's Comment

After creating Final Game with the feeling that it would truly be the last installment, I was thrilled beyond words when I heard there would be a fourth film. In fact, I literally jumped for joy.

When it comes to fourth entries in a series, I think of masterpieces such as Mothra vs. Godzilla and Battles Without Honor and Humanity: Final Episode. Both are among the finest films in their respective franchises.

That means this movie must become the greatest Kaiji film ever made.

Reuniting with Tatsuya Fujiwara's Kaiji, introducing new characters, and creating new games has been an incredibly enjoyable experience.

We are currently working hard to complete the film and bring it to audiences as soon as possible.

Please look forward to it.
