A Massive Hit Following the First Film

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the second installment following The Super Mario Bros Movie, has become a worldwide blockbuster. The first film, released in 2023, grossed over $1.3 billion globally.

In Japan, the sequel opened on April 24 and quickly claimed the number one spot at the weekend box office, earning approximately 1.6 billion yen in its first three days through April 26.

In North America, where the film premiered earlier on April 1, it continues to perform strongly in its fourth week, surpassing $386.5 million in total revenue. Worldwide earnings have exceeded $830 million as of April 27, maintaining its record breaking momentum.

Miyamoto on Character Evolution Through Film

Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo spoke about how the transition from games to film has transformed the characters.

He explained that in games, characters were originally presented through pixel art or understood through player interaction, often with limited movement. However, the film medium allows them to move freely and exist more dynamically.

Miyamoto noted that Mario evolved from a three dimensional figure resembling a “puppet” into a more human like presence in the film, describing this shift as a major step forward.

Strong Collaboration with Illumination

Miyamoto also praised the production team at Illumination, stating that the staff seemed to understand Mario as deeply as, or even more than, Nintendo itself.

He expressed trust in directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, as well as screenwriter Matthew Fogel, highlighting the strength of the creative team behind the film.

He added that the large cast of characters appears naturally integrated, giving the impression that they have always existed together within the Mario universe. This, he said, reflects the franchise’s 40 year history.

Redefining Female Characters

One of the most notable evolutions in the film is the portrayal of female characters.

In early games, female characters were often depicted as heroines awaiting rescue. In contrast, the film presents them as independent and strong, both emotionally and physically.

In this sequel, alongside Princess Peach, Rosetta also appears, with greater focus on their inner conflicts and emotional depth.

Miyamoto explained that games require simplicity so players can quickly understand objectives, which is why the classic “rescue the princess” structure became a functional symbol. While he acknowledged that such portrayals may not align with modern perspectives, he noted that game systems cannot always be easily changed.

However, for the film, the team chose to make bold changes through extensive discussions with Illumination.

He stated that while the first film clearly introduced the concept of a “fighting female character,” the sequel goes further by exploring Peach’s struggles, emotions, and her evolving relationship with Mario, resulting in a richer portrayal.

Chris Meledandri also commented on audience reactions in the United States, noting that women and children in particular resonated with the strength of the characters.

Villains and Family Themes

The film also places strong emphasis on its villains, Bowser and Bowser Jr.

Meledandri explained that compelling villains make a film more engaging. In this installment, Bowser’s unfulfilled love and his relationship with his son are explored in greater depth.

Nintendo has always aimed to create works that families can enjoy together. Miyamoto emphasized that an important principle in production is not underestimating children.

He stated that while children may have less knowledge, they possess strong emotional understanding. Therefore, the goal is not to oversimplify content, but to communicate naturally in a way that resonates with both children and adults. He also highlighted a commitment to humor that does not rely on crude jokes.

A Franchise for All Generations

The Super Mario franchise has grown into something that can be enjoyed not only by parents and children, but across three generations including grandparents.

Miyamoto expressed hope that even those who have only minimal familiarity with the games or characters can enjoy the film as if they fully understand the world.

He concluded by saying that he hopes the movie will create opportunities for cross generational communication in theaters, further expanding the reach of the Mario universe.
