A Live Action Musical Adventure Inspired by Polynesian Culture
The film is a live action musical adventure based on Disney’s 2017 animated film Moana. Set on the South Pacific island of Motu Nui, it follows Moana, a young girl chosen by the ocean, as she sets sail across the sea to save the world.
The film is directed by Thomas Kail, known for bringing the acclaimed Broadway musical Hamilton to the screen. Catherine Laga'aia, a 19 year old newcomer with a remarkable singing voice, has been cast as Moana. Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Maui in the animated version, returns as the demigod hero in the live action film.
Cast and Staff Speak About Respect for the Animated Film
In the newly released special video, the cast and staff reveal that they approached the production with deep love and respect for the animated version. Because the story was born from inspiration drawn from Polynesian culture and the spirit of the people of the South Pacific, the live action film was created with particular care for its cultural roots and pride.
The video opens with sweeping images of Moana seen from behind in the sunset and the lush landscapes of Motu Nui, bringing the world of Moana to life with striking visual beauty.
Dwayne Johnson comments, “Moana is special to me. I’m truly proud that we can portray our Polynesian culture like this.” He also says, “We have to protect the image of the animated version,” expressing his sense of responsibility toward the live action adaptation.
As the residents of Motu Nui are shown joyfully dancing, Catherine Laga'aia, who plays Moana, says, “Everyone in this film faithfully expressed Moana’s spirit.” Her words reveal how the entire cast and staff worked to infuse the film with culture and soul.
Director Thomas Kail adds, “It’s the best team. Local craftspeople and artisans came together.” Staff members in charge of costumes and choreography share their own thoughts, saying, “It’s a dream job. Not only can I create beautiful costumes, but it is also my own culture,” and “The meaning of this is huge. Just seeing faces like ours on screen is moving.”
Toward the end of the video, Johnson says, “On the islands, the mysterious power that lives within us is called mana. This film is full of mana.” He then passionately adds, “I can’t wait for the world to see it.”
The trailer released last month offered the first look at Johnson as Maui, sparking major buzz on social media with comments such as “The Rock is too perfect as Maui” and “I absolutely want to see this in theaters.” Expectations are likely to rise even further for the summer 2026 release, with its beautiful ocean scenery and grand music.
