Star Fox Joins the Mario Universe

One of the biggest talking points surrounding The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the appearance of Fox McCloud, a character from Nintendo’s Star Fox series.

The inclusion of a character from a completely different game franchise marks an unusual crossover. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Chris Meledandri of Illumination shared how this unexpected decision came to life.

Miyamoto recalled that during discussions about creating a “Mario like galaxy,” the idea suddenly came from the Illumination team to include Fox.

He said he found the proposal interesting, but acknowledged there was a major challenge behind it.

Breaking Nintendo’s Longstanding Rule

According to Miyamoto, Nintendo had long followed a rule of not allowing characters from different game series to coexist within the same world.

He humorously noted that he himself had been one of the people advocating for that rule.

This time, however, the team decided to change that principle. Miyamoto explained that he had to persuade others within the company, effectively conducting internal lobbying to gain approval for bending the rule.

As a result, the ambitious crossover beyond franchise boundaries was finally realized.

Why Glen Powell Was Cast as Fox

Another major topic overseas has been the casting of Glen Powell as the English voice of Fox McCloud.

Powell rose to global fame for his role as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick, and his involvement in the film drew significant attention.

Meledandri revealed that the casting actually began with Powell himself reaching out during the promotion of the previous film.

Powell expressed his love for Star Fox and said he wanted more people to know about the character, essentially pitching himself for the role.

As discussions about the character progressed, the team concluded that Powell’s voice, personality, and understanding of the game made him an ideal fit to portray Fox.

Meledandri also recalled that when they officially offered him the role, Powell was genuinely delighted and clearly enjoyed the recording process.

Hollywood Stars Eager to Join Nintendo Films

Powell was not the only actor to approach the production team.

Meledandri noted that many Hollywood actors have expressed strong interest in participating in Nintendo films.

He explained that while studios usually reach out to actors, in this case the opposite often happens, with actors and voice performers actively requesting to be involved.

This, he said, is one of the unique aspects of Nintendo’s film projects.

Brie Larson, who voices Rosetta, was also one of the enthusiastic Nintendo fans who wanted to join the project.

Miyamoto reflected on this situation by saying he feels fortunate that both the Illumination staff and the cast are genuine fans of Mario.

A New Creative Era Driven by Passion

Miyamoto added that if he had worked alone, the project would not have reached such a scale.

He emphasized that the film was created by people who genuinely love Mario, which has led to something that feels like a new creative genre.

The crossover of characters beyond franchise boundaries and the involvement of creators and actors from around the world highlight the expanding influence of the Mario universe.

The passion for Mario continues to grow, and its reach shows no signs of slowing down.
