The series, originally serialized from 2016 to 2020 in Weekly Shonen Jump by writer Kaiu Shirai and illustrator Posuka Demizu, is a widely acclaimed manga. It follows a group of children living peacefully in an orphanage who uncover the shocking truth that they are being raised as food for demons, prompting them to plan a daring escape.

Centered on protagonist Emma, the story depicts children raised in the orphanage as they resist a cruel fate while striving toward hope. The series gained popularity for its intense psychological battles, suspenseful storytelling, and dynamic action sequences. It also expanded into a large scale media franchise, including a television anime and a live action film adaptation, with total manga circulation surpassing 42 million copies.

The work has received numerous accolades, including first place in the male readers category of This Manga Is Amazing! 2018 published by Takarajimasha, as well as the 63rd Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category. The anime adaptation aired in January 2019, and a live action film starring Minami Hamabe was released in 2020.

Additionally, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the series, its first stage musical adaptation is scheduled to premiere in winter 2026.
