A 35 Year Legacy Comes to a Close

Inochi no Utsuwa tells the story of Kyoko Ariyoshi, an obstetrician and gynecologist who encounters a wide range of patients facing complex circumstances while navigating life with her husband and children. Through these experiences, the series explores the preciousness of life and the bonds of family in a deeply human drama.

In the final chapter, Yamano Clinic, which had been destroyed in a fire, finally prepares for a new beginning. The story portrays the grown and matured figures of the characters, moving interactions with those whose roles are coming to an end, and a hopeful final scene filled with a message for the future.

The series began serialization 35 years ago in 1991 in the monthly women oriented manga magazine Eve Special for Mrs. No.30 published in October 1991. After the magazine was rebranded as the monthly For Mrs. in 1995, the manga continued its run and became one of the publication’s flagship works. As of March 2026, it stands as the longest running serialized manga under a single title.

In Japan, only around 20 manga titles have released more than 100 collected volumes under the same name. Within the category of women’s manga, that number is even smaller, according to Akita Publishing as of March 2026.

Kimiko Uehara on the Secret to Longevity

Reflecting on her decades long serialization, Kimiko Uehara shared the reason she was able to continue for so many years.

“I was able to keep going because I love drawing manga. When my editor at the time proposed the theme of a female obstetrician and the human stories surrounding pregnant women, I realized I myself knew very little about pregnancy and thought, I absolutely want to draw this. Throughout the 35 years of serialization, I always tried to make it an enjoyable manga if it could bring comfort to readers. When readers find a work enjoyable, it is also enjoyable for the creator.”
