Wacom Wins Ub Iwerks Award at the 53rd Annie Awards for Technical Innovation in Animation
Wacom, the Japanese pen tablet manufacturer, has received the Ub Iwerks Award at the 53rd Annie Awards, often referred to as the Academy Awards of the animation industry. The ceremony was held on February 21 local time, recognizing Wacom for its significant contributions to technological innovation in animation.

The Ub Iwerks Award honors individuals and companies that have made a substantial impact on technical advancement in the field of animation. Wacom was highly praised for its technological expertise, which has supported the foundation of animation production, as well as for its continued support of the global creative community.

Recognizing a Legacy of Innovation in Animation Technology
The award is named after the legendary animator Ub Iwerks, who brought characters such as Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to life and invented the multiplane camera. It is widely known as a distinction that celebrates groundbreaking technological achievements in animation.
Aubry Mintz, Executive Director of the International Animated Film Society ASIFA Hollywood, the organization behind the Annie Awards, commented on the decision. He revealed that when Wacom’s name was first mentioned among the board members, many assumed the company had already received the honor. He emphasized that Wacom has become an industry standard in professional digital pen and tablet technology and is now indispensable to numerous studios and production environments worldwide.
Supporting Creators Since 1983
Founded in Saitama Prefecture in 1983, Wacom has continuously developed tools for professional creators. The company commercialized the world’s first cordless digital pen and has played a key role in advancing digital drawing technologies.
In animation production, Wacom’s devices are used across a broad range of processes, from early concept sketches and storyboard creation to the final stages of animation. Its products have become essential tools in modern production workflows.
The company’s recognition extends beyond product development. Wacom has actively supported the creative community through educational programs, training initiatives, and event sponsorships. It also provided financial assistance to AnimAID, an initiative supporting animation professionals affected by wildfires in Los Angeles. These industry wide contributions were also cited as part of the reason for the award.
Mintz stated that for all these reasons, he is extremely proud to present this year’s Ub Iwerks Award to Wacom.
This honor marks global recognition of Wacom’s longstanding contributions to the evolution of digital creative environments and its enduring support for the animation industry.
