Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei Creator Koji Kumeta Draws Frieren Illustration to Celebrate Season 2 Broadcast

The official X account of the popular anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has been updated to reveal a newly released illustration celebrating the broadcast of Season 2, drawn by Koji Kumeta, the acclaimed manga creator behind Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei and Kakushigoto.

The illustration depicts Frieren alongside symbolic items closely associated with the series, creating a single, fantastical visual that captures the spirit of the work.

Serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is an epilogue fantasy that follows the story after a hero’s party has defeated the Demon King. The narrative centers on the elven mage Frieren, who embarks on new adventures with new companions in a world that continues after the death of the hero.

Set in the novel time frame of after the Demon King’s defeat, the series delivers emotionally resonant drama and dialogue, battles featuring magic and swords, and moments of humor that naturally draw a smile. The story woven by its characters has earned widespread acclaim among readers. The manga won the grand prize at the Manga Taisho 2021 awards, and the original comic series has surpassed 32 million copies in cumulative circulation.

The first season of the anime aired from September 2023 to March 2024, concluding with Frieren, Fern, and Stark continuing their journey toward their destination, Aureole, the land where souls rest. Season 2 will adapt the story beginning with Chapter 61 from Volume 7 of the original manga.
