Grok Image Editing Becomes Paywalled for Paid Subscribers on X as Sexual Image Manipulation Sparks Controversy

Grok image editing functionality on X has been restricted to paid subscribers as concerns over sexual image manipulation continue to grow. On January 9 Japan time, X quietly changed the specifications of its generative AI tool Grok, limiting image generation and editing features exclusively to users with active subscriptions.

The image editing function, which was introduced at the end of last month, allowed all users to request modifications to images posted on X. However, the feature quickly drew criticism after numerous cases emerged in which photos of women were altered into sexually suggestive images, including edits that added swimwear or other sexualized elements.

On January 3, manga artist Yoichiro Tanabe posted an edited image on X that was based on a photograph of a member of the Japanese idol group STU48. The incident escalated when another member of the group publicly called for the image to be removed. Tanabe issued an apology on January 5, stating that his post lacked sufficient consideration and caused discomfort to many people.

Despite the backlash, image editing requests on X continued. On January 9, Japan’s Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Yoshimasa Hayashi stated during a press conference that he would urge X to take appropriate action. Later that same day, around 3:00 p.m., users attempting to request image edits through Grok began seeing a message stating that image generation and editing features are now limited to paid subscribers and can be unlocked by registering for a subscription.

The unannounced change prompted confusion on X, with users posting comments such as asking when the feature became paid and expressing surprise that it had been free only moments earlier.

While image generation and editing are now restricted, images created by paid subscribers remain publicly viewable. Other Grok features, including text based question and answer functions, continue to be available to all users at no cost.
