Gundam Wing Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary With a Special Dinner Show: Hikaru Midorikawa Recreates Heero’s Iconic Invitation Scene

First broadcast on April 7, 1995, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is the second entry in the Gundam franchise’s Alternative series, which explores a universe separate from the Universal Century timeline. To celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary, the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing 30th Anniversary Dinner Show Operation Reunion was held on the 27th at the Ballroom of The Prince Park Tower Tokyo.

Known as a landmark title in the Alternative Gundam lineup, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing reached a major milestone with this event, which also marked the first dinner show in the history of the Gundam franchise. From early in the day, fans dressed as if attending Relena’s birthday party gathered at the venue, eager to purchase exclusive merchandise created especially for the occasion. An adjacent exhibition area featured the 30th anniversary key visual and a popular photo spot recreating the famous scene from episode one in which Heero tears up Relena’s invitation. Flower stands sent by fan groups lined the entrance, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

Live Performances and Iconic Scenes Recreated
The daytime show welcomed 700 attendees holding highly sought after tickets. The program opened with a live performance of Eien to Mugen o Kono Te ni from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Original Soundtrack Operation 1, performed by composer Kou Otani and violinist Koichiro Muroya. After Relena appeared on screen to deliver the opening greeting and asked Heero to take over, Hikaru Midorikawa as Heero Yuy emerged from the back of the hall alongside Toshihiko Seki as Duo Maxwell, Shigeru Nakahara as Trowa Barton, Ai Orikasa as Quatre Raberba Winner, and Ryuzo Ishino as Chang Wufei.

As applause filled the ballroom, the cast performed energetic live exchanges set to the opening theme RHYTHM EMOTION by TWO MIX. Hearing the unchanged voices of the characters after nearly 30 years drew cheers from the audience. Midorikawa then reenacted a famous moment from episode one by tearing up an envelope labeled Operation Reunion while declaring he would not attend a dinner show, delighting fans with a faithful homage.

Following Heero’s line accepting the mission, the five voice actors walked between the tables to greet fans on stage. Midorikawa delivered the legendary line I will kill you, prompting a huge reaction. Seki welcomed the audience with Duo’s trademark energy, Nakahara invited everyone to celebrate the anniversary together, Orikasa incorporated one of Quatre’s signature phrases, and Ishino adapted Wufei’s dialogue into a humorous greeting.

Gundam Inspired Cuisine and Cast Talk
The event continued with a presentation of the special menu by the Gundam pilots dressed in chef coats. Each dish was inspired by characters and iconic imagery from the series, accompanied by playful banter among the cast. After a toast led by Midorikawa, TWO MIX returned with a special mix of White Reflection Xmas Time Edition, during which the cast once again visited tables as fans enjoyed their meals alongside clips of memorable scenes from the anime.

After dinner, a cross talk segment allowed the five actors to reflect on recording memories, auditions, and behind the scenes stories from the original production. Laughter filled the hall as they shared unexpected anecdotes about their casting and experiences during the series.
Games, Messages, and Emotional Live Voice Acting

The attraction segment titled Gundam Wing Audience Self Destruct Quiz involved audience participation and lighthearted challenges, all successfully completed without triggering the comedic self destruct penalty. Congratulatory messages from series composer Katsuyuki Sumisawa and TWO MIX were read aloud, followed by a video message from Ryotaro Okiayu as Treize Khushrenada, who even sang a portion of his character song.

Composer Kou Otani then performed newly written music for the event, including Hymn for GUNDAM W, expressing themes of fear, madness, and prayers for peace that remain relevant 30 years later. A voice message from Takehito Koyasu as Zechs Merquise followed, leading into a live voice acting segment featuring newly produced launch sequences synced with anime footage.

A video message from Akiko Yajima as Relena Peacecraft concluded with a live reenactment of the final episode’s climactic scene. The emotional performance earned a standing ovation.

The night ended with a special live performance of WHITE REFLECTION, the theme from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz. With colorful penlights illuminating the venue and explosive stage effects recreating self destruct and bazooka scenes, the cast delivered a powerful finale. The dreamlike anniversary dinner show concluded amid thunderous applause and heartfelt gratitude from the Gundam pilots.
