Madoka Magica Reveals New Footage After 12 Years: Main Story Cuts and Dialogue Unveiled in Walpurgisnacht Rising

The latest film in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series has unveiled new footage after 12 years, revealing main story cuts and dialogue in the second trailer for Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising, scheduled for release in February 2026.

Walpurgisnacht Rising is produced as the official sequel to Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, which was released in theaters in 2013. The main creative staff from the television anime and previous films return for this project. Akiyuki Shinbo serves as chief director, Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus is responsible for the screenplay, Ume Aoki provides the original character designs, Yuki Kajiura composes the music, and animation production is handled by SHAFT.

Originally planned for release in winter 2024, the film was postponed to winter 2025 due to production circumstances. It is now officially scheduled to premiere in February 2026. This marks the franchise’s first new theatrical film in 12 years and 4 months, following the release of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion in October 2013.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica tells the story of middle school girl Madoka Kaname and other girls who become magical girls in exchange for having their wishes granted, only to face cruel and hidden fates as they fight enemies threatening humanity. Set in a futuristic city, the series explores the harsh realities behind the magical girl concept.

When the television series aired in 2011, it gained widespread acclaim for its contrast between cute everyday scenes and unpredictable, suspenseful storytelling, its unique worldview surrounding magical girls, and SHAFT’s distinctive visual style. The franchise became a major cultural phenomenon.

In 2013, the completely new film Rebellion was released and achieved box office revenue exceeding 20 billion yen, becoming the first theatrical film adaptation of a late night anime series to reach that milestone. Since then, the popularity of Puella Magi Madoka Magica has continued through manga adaptations, games, figures, and a wide range of merchandise.
