Uma Musume’s overseas expansion

This sparked curiosity about Japanese racing history, blending sports drama with anime charm and real-world legacy. More than just a game launch, Uma Musume’s growth beyond Japan represents a cultural crossover, connecting fans to legendary horses while fostering creativity and community through anime culture. For many international fans, this discovery has only deepened their fascination.

In Cygames’ Uma Musume Pretty Derby series, beloved characters spring to life, each inspired by real-world racehorses. Among them stand some of the most unforgettable personalities Gold Ship, Orfevre, and Nakayama Festa. Though strikingly different in temperament, they all share a remarkable bond: they are daughters of the legendary stallion Stay Gold, a racehorse who transformed from an eternal runner-up into a symbol of perseverance and triumph.

From silver collector to golden legacy—the saga of Stay Gold and his prodigious descendants

He debuted only in December of his two-year-old season, and didn’t capture his first victory until May as a three year old, making him a rather late bloomer among his generation. After breaking his maiden, he went on to win a 5-million-yen class race, and in the autumn added a 9-million-yen class win, barely earning a spot in the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger). He entered the Kikuka Sho because horses with higher prize money were withdrawn, but on the day he was 10th favorite and was poorly rated, finishing in 8th place behind Matikanefukukitaru.

But after finishing second in the Diamond Stakes, Stay Gold’s “Collector of Silver & Bronze” began.

First came a runner-up finish behind Mejiro Bright in the Tenno Sho (Spring). Then, in the Takarazuka Kinen, he chased Silence Suzuka to within Three quarters of a length, finishing second again. In the Tenno Sho (Autumn), he was runner-up to Offside Trap, and he closed out the year with a third-place finish in the Arima Kinen.

From the Diamond Stakes onward, his record in graded races was seven runner-up finishes and seven third-place finishes.

On a rain-soaked Saturday, with jockey Yutaka Take in the saddle, Stay Gold lined up for the Meguro Kinen. In the stretch he shot sharply through a gap in the pack, pulling away to win his first graded stakes race by a length and a quarter.

At seven years old in 2001, Stay Gold easily captured the Nikkei Shinshun Hai as his season opener, earning his second graded stakes title. Boldly, he then headed to Dubai and won the Dubai Sheema Classic. Later that year, in his farewell race ,the Hong Kong Vase, he produced a powerful late charge to claim victory, achieving, remarkably, the first overseas G1 triumph by a Japanese-bred, Japanese-trained horse.

Even after his retirement, his trainer, Yasuro Ikee, expressed his regret at the horse’s departure, saying,
“He was impossible not to love. Yes, that’s just the kind of horse.”he was.

Stay Gold, who revealed so many distinctive sides of himself — spirited, strong, and endlessly fascinating — was a truly unforgettable horse, I Can't Stop Loving You, no matter how many years passed.
