Progress on 'Dragon Quest XII' Still Under Wraps Despite Ongoing Development, Says Yuji Horii: "I Was Just in a Meeting About It"

The 'Dragon Quest' series is a role-playing game where players become the protagonist of the story and face off against a demon king attempting to take over the world. The first 'Dragon Quest' game, developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix, was released in 1986 and has since become one of Japan's most iconic game titles.

The production of 'Dragon Quest XII' was announced in May 2021. At that time, Horii described the new game as "having a darker tone, aimed at an adult audience." He also teased significant changes to the traditional command battle system, saying, "We've revamped the command battle system. It will change! I think even long-time users will find it enjoyable and seamless."

On this "Dragon Quest Day," Horii posted on X, saying, "Thank you all so much for the many congratulations. As for 'Dragon Quest XII,' which has been a cause for concern, I was just in a meeting about it. I can't reveal details yet, but I want it to be a fitting tribute to the two people who have passed away. Let's give it our all!"
