Tomo Sakurai, Pioneer of the “Idol Voice Actress” Era — A Central Figure in the 1990s Voice Actor Boom, Remembered for Her Grace and Charisma

Voice actress Tomo Sakurai passed away on August 13 at the age of 53, as announced by her agency Feathered and her official X account. During the 1990s voice actor boom, she was widely recognized as a pioneer of the “idol voice actress” movement. Following news of her passing, tributes from fellow voice actors filled social media, highlighting not only her accomplishments but also her grace and warmth. The author, recalling an interview with her in 2022, was reminded—like so many others—of her elegance and dignity.

The term idol voice actress refers to performers who not only voice characters but also actively pursue careers as singers, actresses, and entertainers.

Sakurai debuted in 1987 as a member of the three-girl idol unit Lemon Angel. She later shifted to voice acting, appearing in numerous works such as Mylene Jenius in Macross 7, Meimi Haneoka/Saint Tail in Kaitou Saint Tail, and Misao Makimachi in Rurouni Kenshin. She was also active in dubbing foreign films.

In September 2016, she announced her sudden retirement, citing:
“I have come to realize that my important voice as an actor has become increasingly difficult to produce. As a voice actress, I could not endure such changes.”
However, she returned to the industry in 2019, and in recent years gained renewed attention for playing the beloved character Cynthia in Pokémon.

A Pioneer in the 1990s Voice Actor Boom

Sakurai was a central figure in the 1990s voice actor boom. Though common now, it was groundbreaking at the time for voice actors to appear in magazine gravure features. In 1997, she even graced the cover of Oricon Weekly The Ichiban, a magazine issue that also featured L’ArcenCiel, Ulfuls, and Every Little Thing—evidence of her immense popularity at the time.

The magazine Seiyuu Grand Prix, launched in 1994 during this boom, released a special issue in 2023 titled Seiyuu Grand Prix Platinum, revisiting female voice actresses who sparked the 1990s wave. Alongside Sakurai, the issue highlighted Hekiru Shiina, Mariko Koda, Junko Iwao, and Chisa Yokoyama.
In introducing Sakurai, the editorial team wrote:

“Transitioning from idol to voice actress, Tomo Sakurai fully showcased her singing and acting talents, igniting immense popularity. Her heroines in works such as Macross 7 and Kaitou Saint Tail remain etched in people’s memories. Her striking visual beauty, which shone on magazine pages, still endures today.”

Tributes From Fellow Voice Actors

Sakurai’s passing prompted heartfelt messages from colleagues. Shigeru Chiba (@1kamisama1) wrote on X:
“I was shocked to learn of Tomo Sakurai’s passing... She was an actress with a radiant smile, straight and graceful. May she rest in peace.”

Mayumi Iizuka (@MayuTama0103) also remembered:
“When I was still new to voice acting, I had the chance to work alongside Tomo Sakurai. Her dazzling presence and graceful demeanor left a lasting impression. Even when we reunited in the studio years later, she greeted me with a warm smile. Thank you for that kindness. I truly wish we could have worked together again. Rest in peace.”

Megumi Ogata shared a lengthy reflection:
“The last time I saw her was during BS-TBS’s The People X Years Later, where the theme was the ‘voice actor boom.’ She was without question one of the figures who sparked the movement in the 1990s. Unlike people like me, who were lifted by the works themselves, she was the true definition of an ‘idol voice actress.’ Even up to the end, as I hear how she thought of her fans until her final days, I realize she continued to embody the very essence of an idol. My heart is full.

She faced both the light and shadow of that era, yet always endured with a smile. At the time, I didn’t fully understand why she went that far, but I now respect the pride and determination she held. I will never forget her kindness, her performances, or the time we shared, especially connected to Rurouni Kenshin. She worked so hard. Thank you, Tomo-chan. Rest peacefully. Until we meet again on the next stage.”

Cherished Memories of Cynthia in Pokémon

An ORICON NEWS reporter also interviewed Sakurai in 2022 about reprising her role as Cynthia in Pokémon. In the story, Cynthia battled Ash in the semifinals of the World Championships, marking her long-awaited return after nine years.

Sakurai reflected at the time:
“It had been so long since I played her, and part of me thought, ‘Maybe Cynthia will never appear in the anime again.’ So I was truly happy at her return. When I was leaving the studio after another recording, the director told me, ‘Cynthia will appear again, so please take care of her.’ I was so thrilled that I couldn’t help exclaiming, ‘Yay!’”

She continued:
“Every role I’ve played holds a special meaning for me. Among them, Pokémon is a series loved by all generations and something children inevitably encounter while growing up. Watching my nieces and nephews shout ‘Pokémon! Pokémon!’ with excitement, I felt that just being part of the series was already a treasure as an actress. It was such an honor to reprise Cynthia, a character beloved by so many.”

At that time, due to the pandemic, the interview was conducted remotely. The author recalls Sakurai easing the atmosphere with a smile, saying:
“Since we both share the surname Sakurai, let’s enjoy this 30 minutes together. Fufufu.”

Upon hearing the news of her passing, the author’s first memory was of that elegant, graceful smile.
