Jumidoro Defies the Odds—Cancellation Averted After Sales Surge: Editor’s Unconventional Strategy Pays Off
On May 21, the editorial team behind Jumidoro, a manga currently serialized on Magazine Pocket (Magapoke), announced that the series has avoided cancellation thanks to a sharp turnaround in sales. Instead of following the common strategy of previewing multiple chapters for free, the editor chose to repeatedly promote just the first chapter. “I was confident that once readers saw Chapter 1, they’d definitely want to read Chapter 2,” the editor explained.

Serialized since September 2024, Jumidoro made a strong debut after its first chapter went viral on social media. The first volume sold well, and the series quickly became a regular in Magapoke’s popularity rankings—a rare feat for a debut work.
However, things took a turn when Volume 2 was released, leading to a steep drop in popularity and a potential cancellation looming. That changed dramatically on April 9, 2025, when Volume 3 hit shelves and triggered a V-shaped recovery in both print and digital sales.

Digital sales in particular saw a stunning rebound. While Volume 2 had dropped to about 65% of Volume 1’s numbers, Volume 3 sold 170% more than Volume 2, marking a remarkable recovery.
Author Koichi Taki shared his emotional rollercoaster:
“Jumidoro was my first serialization, and I was really just finding my footing. When the first chapter blew up online, I felt like maybe I had a shot. But as the series went on, PVs and comments started to drop, and I became increasingly anxious.”
He added:
“Even though my editor was supportive and I felt good about what I was creating, hearing that Volume 2's sales had dropped was a wake-up call about how tough serialization can be. That’s why I was honestly relieved to hear that Volume 3’s sales were 1.7 times higher!”
The editor noted that the typical promotion method at Magapoke is to release up to three chapters on social media to hook readers. However, in this case, he chose to go all-in on Chapter 1 promotion:
“With such a tight budget for a rookie author, we put all our marketing resources into spreading the first chapter. I was advised to release up to Chapter 3, but I stuck to my strategy—and I’m glad I did.”
