Surprise in "Demon Slayer" Original Developments: Iguro and Sanemi Team Up in Opening Scene; Trends #1 Within 10 Minutes of Broadcast
The popular TV anime "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" aired its new installment, "Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc,".
The first episode, "To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji," picks up where two Hashiras, together with Tanjiro and others, have defeated two Upper Rank demons in the Swordsmith Village. The presence of Nezuko, who has overcome the sun, hints at a significant upcoming battle with Muzan Kibutsuji. Amidst these developments, a Pillar Meeting is convened at the Ubuyashiki estate.
The episode opens with a scene where the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and the Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro, team up to battle demons. This marks the first time they showcase the "Wind Breathing" and "Serpent Breathing" techniques, and the scene is an original story exclusive to the anime.
This led to "Demon Slayer" trending #1 on X (formerly Twitter) within 10 minutes of airing, with "original anime development" trending at #2. Comments like "It looks like there'll be quite a bit of original content in the Hashira Training Arc since the original manga arc was short," "Demon Slayer starts off with original content and it's awesome," "The combat debut of Serpent Hashira Iguro and Wind Hashira Sanemi was sudden, and the animation for Serpent Breathing was incredibly divine" reflect the audience's surprise and delight.
"Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc" is based on volumes 15-16 of the original manga, where Tanjiro and his comrades receive further training from the Demon Slayer Corps' highest-ranking swordsmen, the Hashiras, to grow stronger. "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" from February 2016 to May 2020, becoming a blockbuster hit with over 150 million copies of the comics sold.
Set in the Taisho era, the story revolves around a young boy, Tanjiro Kamado, who joins the Demon Slayer Corps to avenge his family killed by demons and to restore his demon-transformed sister, Nezuko, back to human. The first season of the anime aired from April to September 2019, becoming a cultural phenomenon. It led to the blockbuster movie "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train" in October 2020, which grossed over 40 billion yen in Japan. The sequel to the movie, "Entertainment District Arc," was broadcast as the anime's second season starting in December 2021, followed by the third season, "Swordsmith Village Arc," which aired from April 2023.
