New “Pokémon Ecology Encyclopedia” Explores Over 1,000 Pokémon Species from a Scientific Perspective – Out June 18

The highly anticipated Pokémon Ecology Encyclopedia, an official new publication from the Pokémon franchise, is set to be released on June 18. This in-depth guide offers a unique perspective on wild Pokémon, delving into their ecology through four major themes: form and appearance, lifestyle, interspecies interactions, and movement abilities.

The book is supervised by Dr. Yoshinari Yonehara (Ph.D. in Agriculture), a current employee at The Pokémon Company. Illustrations are provided by Chihiro Kinoshita, known for detailed and colorful depictions in animal ecology books. Both experts hold doctoral degrees from the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo and bring academic rigor to the analysis of Pokémon behavior.

With over 1,000 species now in existence, the book explores how Pokémon live, examining their physical characteristics, diet, sleep patterns, relationships with other Pokémon, and methods of movement. It interprets in-universe Pokédex data to uncover patterns, differences, and connections in Pokémon ecology.

Chapter 1: Pokémon Forms and Appearances

This section explores how environmental factors influence a Pokémon's form—such as gender differences, regional variants, form changes, and evolution. It provides insight into how these features connect to each species’ ecological behavior.

Chapter 2: Pokémon Lifestyles

Readers will learn how Pokémon obtain food, regulate body temperature, and adjust their daily and seasonal routines. The chapter also covers unique sleep behaviors and other lifestyle adaptations based on changes in time, moon phases, and climate.

Chapter 3: Pokémon Interactions

This chapter focuses on how Pokémon interact with each other, including cooperation, deception, territorial behavior, and herd dynamics. It also highlights human–Pokémon coexistence and social structures.

Chapter 4: Mobility and Locomotion

One of the key charms of Pokémon is their diverse methods of movement—running, flying, swimming, and more. By comparing these abilities, the book reveals deeper insights into their ecological differences.

With two doctoral experts at the helm, this comprehensive encyclopedia offers an unprecedented look into the real-life inspirations behind Pokémon behavior. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting release.
