Pokémon Voice Actress Rica Matsumoto Performs Iconic Theme at Osaka Expo: “Truly Honored” by Global Fans’ Cheers
On April 30, voice actress and singer Rica Matsumoto opened the Cool Japan Showcase Anime Manga Tourism Festival at the Osaka-Kansai Expo with a powerful live performance of the original Pokémon opening theme, “Mezase Pokémon Master.”
Matsumoto, known worldwide as the voice of Ash Ketchum (Satoshi) in the Pokémon anime for over 26 years, also serves as a Cool Japan Global Ambassador appointed by the Cabinet Office. Her performance at the very first stage of the festival instantly energized the venue.

Fans From Around the World Cheer for a Nostalgic Classic
Anime and manga fans from both Japan and overseas gathered for the event, erupting with joy and applause as Matsumoto sang the beloved 1997 opening theme. Overwhelmed by the response, she reflected:
“It’s such an honor to perform a song that so many people love, right here at the Expo. I’m grateful that I could help connect Japan to the world through this performance.”
The Pokémon anime, which first aired in 1997, continues to be cherished globally, and Matsumoto expressed how deeply moved she was to share that moment on such an international stage.

Cool Japan Campaign Continues to Promote Anime and Manga Tourism
Organized by Japan’s Cabinet Office, the Cool Japan Showcase aims to boost inbound tourism through Japanese pop culture, particularly anime and manga. The event features exhibits and stage events designed to highlight “seichi” (real-world locations from anime and manga) and promote visits to regional Japan.
Running until May 2, the festival is being held at EXPO Messe “WASSE” within the Osaka-Kansai Expo grounds, with 26 anime and manga–related regions and companies participating from across the country.
