Hideaki Anno Closes ‘Space Battleship Yamato’ Exhibit Ceremony with Iconic Line

On March 14, director Hideaki Anno attended the opening ceremony for the Space Battleship Yamato: Complete Record Exhibition, which he planned and produced to commemorate the anime’s 50th anniversary. Anno's Tribute to Space Battleship Yamato

Anno spoke passionately about the impact of Space Battleship Yamato, saying, “This anime wasn’t just influential for me, but for an entire generation who watched it in real-time. It was an epoch-making work and truly ‘one of a kind.’”

He also compared Yamato to another classic, Mobile Suit Gundam, stating, “Yamato remained Yamato—it never became like Gundam, but that was its destiny. I believe that’s what made it such a remarkable work.”

A Historic Exhibition Honoring Yamato

Anno expressed his joy at the exhibition's extensive collection of original setting materials, stating, “I’m truly happy that we were able to uncover and display these rare materials for everyone to see.”

Looking toward the future, he added, “Yamato is a work that should continue to be talked about for another half-century. I won’t be around for the 100th anniversary, but I hope younger generations will continue to pass it on.”

A Message of Gratitude to Fans

During the event, Anno acknowledged not just the staff but also the fans, saying, “Thank you to everyone involved. Events like this have a commercial aspect, but they wouldn’t be possible without the support of the fans. I’m truly grateful to all of you.”

He concluded his speech with a tribute to Yamato’s legendary Captain Okita, stating, “As Okita would say—‘Thank you. That’s all.’”
